📖 Stories from the Salaf: 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Azîz's Moderation

When 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Azîz رحمه الله became caliph, he wanted to reform everything immediately and return rights to their owners.

His son 'Abd al-Malik said to him: "O father! Why don't you implement all the truth now? By Allah, I wouldn't care if you and I boiled in cauldrons for the sake of truth!"

'Umar رحمه الله said a profound statement:

"O my son! I fear that if I burden the people with truth all at once, they will reject it all at once, and that would cause fitnah!"

So he رحمه الله reformed gradually, until he revived the Sunnah and eliminated innovation in just two and a half years!

Lesson learned: Moderation isn't weakness; it's wisdom in implementation. Extremism in reform can produce opposite results.

🎯 Contemporary Cases

Case 1: Extremism in Declaring Muslims Disbelievers

Mahmûd is a religious young man, but he declares everyone who disagrees with him a disbeliever: "So-and-so shaves his beard = disbeliever!" "So-and-so works in a bank = disbeliever!"

Question: What's wrong with his approach?

Answer:

  • ❌ This is the Khawârij's method, not Ahl as-Sunnah's
  • ⚠️ Major sins don't render their doer a disbeliever according to Ahl as-Sunnah
  • The obligation: Advise with wisdom, not declare takfir

Case 2: Negligence in the Name of "Moderate Islam"

Sarah says: "I'm a moderate Muslim. I don't adhere to hijab or the five prayers. What matters is the heart!"

Question: Is this moderation?

Answer:

  • ❌ This isn't moderation but negligence
  • ✅ Moderation: Following the Sharî'ah as Allah commanded
  • ❌ Dropping obligations in the name of "moderation": Misguidance

Case 3: Extremism in Glorifying Individuals

Followers of Sheikh so-and-so say: "Our Sheikh doesn't make mistakes!" "Everyone who disagrees with our Sheikh is misguided!"

Question: What's the ruling?

Answer:

  • Infallibility is for Allah and His Messenger only
  • Everyone's words can be accepted or rejected except the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
  • ⚠️ Extremism about scholars: Can lead to what resembles worshipping them

Case 4: Laxity in Creedal Matters

'Umar says: "All religions lead to Allah. The Muslim, Christian, and Jew are all in Paradise!"

Question: Is this moderation?

Answer:

  • ❌ This is clear disbelief, unrelated to moderation
  • Allah said: ﴿ وَمَن يَبْتَغِ غَيْرَ الْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا فَلَن يُقْبَلَ مِنْهُ ﴾
  • Moderation: Balance in truth, not abandoning it

💡 Pause and Reflect

Personal question:

In our time, the words "moderation" and "tolerance" are used frequently, but they may be used for falsehood too!

How do you distinguish between:

  • True moderation: Following the Salaf's methodology
  • False moderation: Abandoning fundamentals under the pretext of "progress"?

The criterion: Whatever accords with the Quran, Sunnah, and the Salaf's understanding = true moderation

Remember: Moderation isn't the middle between truth and falsehood, but the middle between extremism in truth and negligence in it!
