Introduction and Pillars of Faith
📜 Introduction to Islamic 'Aqeedah and the Pillars of Faith
🌙 PROLOGUE: The Day That Changed Everything
Year 10 of Hijrah, the Mosque of Madinah. The Companions are seated around the Prophet ﷺ.
Suddenly, a man with extremely white clothes and extremely black hair appears. No trace of travel is visible on him, and none of the Companions recognize him.
He sat facing the Prophet ﷺ, placed his knees against his knees, put his hands on his thighs, and began to ask...
After he departed, the Prophet ﷺ said: "That was Jibril who came to teach you your religion."
Why 'Aqeedah?
🏗️ THE BUILDER'S METAPHOR
Imagine an architect building a 100-story skyscraper. He designs the windows, chooses the furniture, plans the elevators...
"What about the foundation?" someone asks.
"Oh, we'll deal with that later!"
What's going to happen? 💥
This is exactly what happens to those who neglect 'Aqeedah to focus only on practices.
'Aqeedah is the foundation upon which everything in your life is built.
'Aqeedah is the foundation upon which everything in your life is built.
Without it, worship becomes soulless movements, morality becomes meaningless rules, and life becomes a journey without a destination.
"Is one who founded his building on righteousness from Allah and His approval better, or one who founded his building on the edge of a crumbling cliff which collapsed with him into the fire of Hell?" (At-Tawbah 9:109)
What is 'Aqeedah?
Linguistic Definition
Al-'Aqeedah comes from "al-'aqd" (العَقْد) which means to tie, to bind firmly. You say: I tied the rope, meaning I fastened it securely.
Religious Definition
It is firm faith that admits no doubt, in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and in divine decree, both good and bad.
It's not just information to memorize, but a certainty that dwells in your heart and translates into your life.
Why 'Aqeedah First?
1️⃣ The First Thing the Prophets Called To
Think about it... What is the first word every prophet said to his people?
"And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, saying: 'Worship Allah and avoid Taghut (false deities).'" (An-Nahl 16:36)
Before prayer, before zakat, before everything: know your Lord.
2️⃣ Thirteen Years in Makkah
What was the Prophet ﷺ doing in Makkah for 13 years?
The five daily prayers weren't made obligatory until the last year. Zakat, fasting, and Hajj weren't prescribed until Madinah.
13 full years to build 'aqeedah in the hearts.
This generation raised on 'aqeedah is the one that opened the world.
3️⃣ The Questions of the Grave
When a person is placed in their grave, they won't be asked: How many rak'at did you pray? How much did you give in charity?
They will be asked:
- Who is your Lord?
- What is your religion?
- Who is your prophet?
Questions of 'aqeedah. Those who lived upon it will answer, and those who didn't know it will stammer.
4️⃣ Condition for Acceptance of Deeds
Allah ﷻ says:
"And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer - those will enter Paradise." (An-Nisa 4:124)
Notice the condition: "while being a believer"
Good deeds without correct faith = scattered dust.
The Importance of Correct 'Aqeedah
It Gives You Answers to Life's Big Questions
Every human asks:
- Where did I come from? ← Allah created you
- Why am I here? ← To worship Allah
- Where am I going? ← To Allah, then Paradise or Hell
'Aqeedah answers all these questions with absolute clarity.
It Grants You Tranquility in Life
"Those who believe and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah. Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." (Ar-Ra'd 13:28)
One who knows Allah doesn't fear the future, doesn't worry about provision, doesn't dread death.
It Protects You from Deviation
In times of trials and doubts, a firm 'aqeedah is your anchor that keeps you stable.
"Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter." (Ibrahim 14:27)
The Hadith of Jibril: The Constitution of the Religion
👼 THE HADITH OF JIBRIL
From 'Umar ibn al-Khattāb
While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day, a man with extremely white clothes and extremely black hair appeared. No trace of travel was visible on him, and none of us recognized him.
He sat facing the Prophet ﷺ, placed his knees against his knees, and put his hands on his thighs.
🔵 Jibril: "O Muhammad, tell me about Islam."
🟢 The Prophet ﷺ: "Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to give zakāt, to fast Ramadan, and to perform pilgrimage if you are able."
🔵 Jibril: "You have spoken the truth. Tell me about faith (Iman)."
🟢 The Prophet ﷺ: "It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in divine decree, both the good and the bad."
🔵 Jibril: "You have spoken the truth. Tell me about excellence (Ihsan)."
🟢 The Prophet ﷺ: "It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, for if you do not see Him, He surely sees you."
🔵 Jibril: "Tell me about the Hour."
🟢 The Prophet ﷺ: "The one being asked knows no more than the one asking."
🔵 Jibril: "Tell me about its signs."
🟢 The Prophet ﷺ: "When the slave woman gives birth to her mistress, and when you see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in building tall structures."
Then he departed. After a while, the Prophet ﷺ said to me:
🟢 The Prophet ﷺ: "O 'Umar, do you know who the questioner was?"
🟡 'Umar: "Allah and His Messenger know best."
🟢 The Prophet ﷺ: "That was Jibril, who came to teach you your religion."
(Sahih Muslim 8)

Quranic Evidence
"The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, saying: 'We make no distinction between any of His messengers.'" (Al-Baqara 2:285)
"Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but true righteousness is in one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, and the Prophets." (Al-Baqara 2:177)
What Does "Iman" (Faith) Mean?
It's Not Just Knowledge
Iblis (Satan) knows that Allah exists, but he is not a believer.
Pharaoh knew the truth:
﴿قَالَ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا أَنزَلَ هَٰؤُلَاءِ إِلَّا رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ بَصَائِرَ﴾
"He said: 'You already know that none has sent these down except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as clear proofs.'" (Al-Isra 17:102)
But he didn't believe.
True Faith
Faith = belief of the heart + affirmation of the tongue + actions of the limbs
- The heart: believes, loves, fears, and hopes
- The tongue: pronounces the two testimonies and remembers Allah
- The limbs: act according to what pleases Allah

🛡️ Refutation of Doubts (الشُّبُهات والرد عليها)
First Doubt: "Aqeedah Divides Muslims"
❌ The Doubt: Some say: "Why study Aqeedah? It divides the Ummah and creates conflicts!"
✅ The Refutation:
-
Correct Aqeedah unifies, it doesn't divide:
﴿وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا﴾
"And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided." [Āl-'Imrān: 103]The rope of Allah is His religion and His correct Aqeedah.
-
Division comes from abandoning correct Aqeedah:
Imam Malik رحمه الله said: "Nothing will reform the end of this Ummah except what reformed its beginning." -
The Companions united upon one Aqeedah and were the greatest generation.
Second Doubt: "It's Enough to Be a Good Person"
❌ The Doubt: "The important thing is to have a good heart, no need to study Aqeedah!"
✅ The Refutation:
-
Deeds without correct Aqeedah are not accepted:
﴿وَقَدِمْنَا إِلَىٰ مَا عَمِلُوا مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ هَبَاءً مَّنثُورًا﴾
"And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed." [Al-Furqān: 23] -
Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ:
« مَنْ عَمِلَ عَمَلًا لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْرُنَا فَهُوَ رَدٌّ »
"Whoever does an action that is not in accordance with our matter, it will be rejected." (Sahih Muslim 1718) -
Example: Abu Talib, the uncle of the Prophet ﷺ, defended and protected him, but he died upon polytheism and it did not benefit him.
Third Doubt: "Worldly Sciences Are More Important in Our Era"
❌ The Doubt: "We are in the age of technology, worldly sciences are the priority!"
✅ The Refutation:
-
Worldly knowledge is useful but not sufficient:
﴿يَعْلَمُونَ ظَاهِرًا مِّنَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ عَنِ الْآخِرَةِ هُمْ غَافِلُونَ﴾
"They know what is apparent of the worldly life, but they are heedless of the Hereafter." [Ar-Rūm: 7] -
Qarun was the richest and most knowledgeable in chemistry:
﴿فَخَسَفْنَا بِهِ وَبِدَارِهِ الْأَرْضَ﴾
"So We caused the earth to swallow him and his home." [Al-Qasas: 81] -
Combining both sciences is possible and Islam encourages it.
Fourth Doubt: "I Cannot Understand the Unseen"
❌ The Doubt: "How can I believe in what I cannot see? The angels, Paradise, Hell..."
✅ The Refutation:
-
The unseen is the sign of true faith:
﴿الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ﴾
"Those who believe in the unseen." [Al-Baqarah: 3] -
You believe in invisible things every day:
- Have you seen your brain? Yet you believe in its existence.
- Have you seen electricity? Yet you believe in it.
- Have you seen your distant ancestors? Yet you believe in their existence.
-
Allah informed us about the unseen and He is the Truthful:
﴿وَمَنْ أَصْدَقُ مِنَ اللَّهِ حَدِيثًا﴾
"And who is more truthful than Allah in statement?" [An-Nisā': 87]
📜 Stories and Traditions from the Righteous Predecessors
The Story of Bilal's Steadfastness
Bilal ibn Rabah was an Abyssinian slave tortured under the scorching sun of Makkah...
Umayyah ibn Khalaf would take him out at midday, place a huge boulder on his chest and say: "You will remain like this until you die or deny Muhammad!"
And Bilal would only repeat: "Ahad... Ahad" (One... One)
🎯 Lesson: Aqeedah firmly rooted in the heart gives its possessor a strength that surpasses all torture.
The Story of Rab'i ibn 'Amir
He entered upon Rustum, the commander of the Persians, who asked him: "What has brought you?"
Rab'i replied:
"Allah has sent us to bring whoever He wills from the worship of servants to the worship of the Lord of servants, from the narrowness of this world to its vastness, and from the injustice of religions to the justice of Islam."
🎯 Lesson: Correct understanding of Aqeedah gives its possessor clarity of vision and a mission in life.
The Story of Imam Ahmad During the Trial
During the fitnah of the creation of the Quran, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal was whipped and imprisoned for years...
He was whipped until he fainted, then he would regain consciousness and say: "Bring me evidence from the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of His Messenger!"
Someone asked him: "How did you endure?"
He said: "When I was stripped for the whipping, a prisoner gave me his waist-wrap and said: O Abu 'Abdillah, I was whipped twice for fornication, so be patient for the Sunnah!"
Imam Ahmad said: "That was the statement that gave me the most strength."
🎯 Lesson: Steadfastness upon correct Aqeedah is a trust that deserves sacrifice.
The Story of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah in Prison
When Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah was imprisoned in the citadel of Damascus, he said:
"What can my enemies do to me? My paradise and my garden are in my heart, wherever I go they are with me, they never leave me. My imprisonment is seclusion, my death is martyrdom, and my expulsion from my land is a journey!"
He also said:
"The prisoner is the one whose heart is imprisoned from his Lord, and the captive is the one whom his desires have captured."
🎯 Lesson: One whose heart is filled with the knowledge of Allah, nothing can harm him.
💎 Statements of Scholars on the Importance of Aqeedah
Imam Abu Hanifa رحمه الله (150H)
"Understanding the Deen is better than understanding legal rulings, and for a man to understand how to worship his Lord is better for him than accumulating much knowledge."
Imam Ash-Shafi'i رحمه الله (204H)
"I believed in Allah and in what came from Allah according to what Allah intended, and I believed in the Messenger of Allah and in what came from the Messenger of Allah according to what the Messenger of Allah intended."
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal رحمه الله (241H)
He was asked: What is knowledge?
He replied: "Knowledge is: Lā ilāha illa Allah."
Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim رحمه الله (751H)
"In the heart there is a scattering that only turning to Allah can gather, a loneliness that only intimacy with Him can dispel, a sadness that only the joy of knowing Him and dealing sincerely with Him can remove, and an anxiety that only fleeing to Him can calm."
Shaykh Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab رحمه الله (1206H)
"Know that Tawheed is to single out Allah alone for worship, and this is the religion of all the Messengers whom Allah sent to His servants."
Shaykh Ibn Baz رحمه الله (1420H)
"Correct Aqeedah is the foundation upon which the religion is built, and righteous deeds are not accepted except with it. Therefore, the Muslim must give it the utmost care."
📿 Hadiths on the Merit of Knowledge of Aqeedah
Hadith of Mu'awiyah
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
« مَنْ يُرِدِ اللَّهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ »
"Whoever Allah wants good for, He gives him understanding of the religion." (Sahih al-Bukhari 71, Sahih Muslim 1037)
Understanding the religion begins with Aqeedah before anything else.
Hadith of Abu Hurayrah
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
« الإِيمَانُ بِضْعٌ وَسَبْعُونَ شُعْبَةً، أَعْلَاهَا قَوْلُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، وَأَدْنَاهَا إِمَاطَةُ الأَذَى عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ »
"Faith has sixty-odd or seventy-odd branches, the highest of which is the saying Lā ilāha illa Allah, and the lowest of which is removing something harmful from the road." (Sahih Muslim 35)
The highest branch of faith: the word of Tawheed — which is the foundation of Aqeedah.
Hadith of 'Itban ibn Malik
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
« إِنَّ اللَّهَ حَرَّمَ عَلَى النَّارِ مَنْ قَالَ: لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، يَبْتَغِي بِذَلِكَ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ »
"Verily Allah has forbidden the Fire for whoever says Lā ilāha illa Allah, seeking thereby the Face of Allah." (Sahih al-Bukhari 415, Sahih Muslim 33)
Supplication
O Allah, show us the truth as truth and grant us to follow it, and show us falsehood as falsehood and grant us to avoid it.
O Allah, teach us what benefits us, let us benefit from what You have taught us, and increase us in knowledge.
My Lord, increase me in knowledge. 📖
