Sunan and Nullifiers of Salah
📜 The Fiqh of Prayer
📖 The Sunan of Prayer and Its Nullifiers
All praise be to Allah who legislated prayer for us in the most perfect manner. May peace and blessings be upon the one who clarified its sunan and its warnings. After learning the pillars and obligations, today we learn about the sunan which beautify the prayer and increase khushu' (humility), and the nullifiers which must be avoided.
 Scene: The Interrupted Prayer
At the mosque, during Maghrib prayer...
Karim is in prostration when suddenly his phone rings at full volume. He had forgotten it in his pocket.
Karim: [panicked, standing up abruptly] "Hello?!"
He immediately realizes his mistake.
Karim: [hanging up] "Astaghfirullah..."
A brother after the prayer: "Unfortunately, your prayer is nullified, akhi. You spoke deliberately."
Karim: "But it was automatic! I didn't think!"
The brother: "That's why the Prophet ﷺ taught us to prepare before prayer. You must redo it."
📍 Lesson: Deliberate speech nullifies the prayer. Always turn off or silence your phone before prayer!
📜 Scene: The Balance Between Sunnah and Obligation
A young student questions his teacher after class...
Yassin: "Sheikh, if I miss the opening supplication because the imam started Al-Fatiha, is my prayer valid?"
The Sheikh: "Yes, your prayer is perfectly valid. The opening supplication is a sunnah, not a pillar or obligation."
Yassin: "Then why bother with it?"
The Sheikh: "Imagine you're inviting the king to your house. You clean the house — that's obligatory. But you also put flowers, prepare perfume — those are the sunan. Your house is livable without the flowers, but with them, you show your love and respect."
Yassin: "So the sunan show our love for the prayer?"
The Sheikh: "Exactly! The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The coolness of my eyes is in the prayer.' The sunan are what transform prayer from an obligation into a delight."
🌟 First: The Sunan of Prayer
1. Confirmed Verbal and Practical Sunan (Sunan Mu'akkadah)
| Sunnah | Proof or Trace | Practical Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Raising the hands with the four takbirs (opening, bowing, rising from it, after standing from the first tashahhud) | Hadith of Ibn 'Umar: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to raise his hands level with his shoulders when he opened the prayer..." — Al-Bukhari (735) | Helps with presence of heart and shows following of the Sunnah |
| Placing the right hand over the left on the chest | Hadith of Wa'il ibn Hujr — An-Nasa'i (889) | Symbolizes humility and discipline |
| The opening supplication | "Allahumma ba'id bayni wa bayna khatayaya..." — Agreed upon | Prepares the heart to enter the prayer |
| Seeking refuge (isti'adha) and basmala before Al-Fatiha | The Most High says: ﴿ When you recite the Quran, seek refuge in Allah ﴿ (An-Nahl: 98) | Invoking refuge repels whispers |
| Reciting a surah after Al-Fatiha in the first two rak'at | Mutawatir practice of the Prophet ﷺ | Nourishes the soul with varied verses |
| Saying "Amin" after Al-Fatiha | Hadith of Abu Hurayra: "When the imam says 'nor of those who went astray,' say Amin..." — Al-Bukhari (782) | A cause for forgiveness of sins if it coincides with the angels' Amin |
| Reciting silently where appropriate and aloud where appropriate | His sunnah ﷺ in the audible and silent prayers | Achieves the legislated balance |
| Multiplying supplications in prostration | "The closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is prostrating" — Muslim (482) | Time of acceptance |
2. Non-confirmed but Recommended Sunan (complete the dignity)
- Sitting briefly to rest after the second prostration in the odd rak'a (hadith of Malik ibn al-Huwayrith — Al-Bukhari 823).
- Saying tasbih more than once in bowing and prostration.
- Lengthening the first rak'a over the second, and Fajr over the other prayers.
- Praying the nafl before and after the obligatory (the rawatib) to support khushu'.
Educational Note: Leaving the sunan does not invalidate the prayer but deprives the worshipper of the perfection of reward, and it also maintains the warmth of faith.
⚠️ Second: The Nullifiers of Prayer
1. Major Nullifiers (invalidate the prayer immediately)
| Nullifier | Proof | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Deliberately omitting a pillar or condition | Mentioned previously | Not prostrating, or making takbir without intention |
| Laughing out loud and speaking for other than the prayer's benefit | Hadith of Zayd ibn Arqam: "This prayer is not suitable for people's speech" — Muslim (537) | Loud laughter |
| Eating and drinking deliberately | Consensus of scholars | Even if a small amount |
| Flagrant exposure of the 'awra | Covering the 'awra is a condition | Torn clothing without covering |
| Minor or major hadath (ritual impurity) | The Prophet's ﷺ statement: "Prayer is not accepted without purification" — Muslim | Passing wind, or breaking wudu |
2. Minor Nullifiers (contrary to khushu' and to be avoided)
- Excessive continuous movement without necessity.
- Continuously turning with the head or body.
- Playing with the phone or clothing.
- Raising the gaze to the sky (the Prophet ﷺ prohibited this — Al-Bukhari 750).
- Supplicating for forbidden worldly matters.
Rule: What corrupts khushu' may not invalidate the prayer but diminishes the reward, so let the worshipper be cautious.
🎓 Comparison of Schools on Some Sunan and Nullifiers
📌 Position of Hands in Prayer
| School | Chosen Position | Proof |
|---|---|---|
| 🟡 Maliki | Releasing (sadl) is the recognized view, clasping (qabḍ) is permissible | Practice of the Companions رضي الله عنهم |
| 🟢 Hanafi | Below the navel for men, on the chest for women | Hadith of Wail ibn Hujr (according to their interpretation) |
| 🔵 Shafi'i | On the chest, right over left | Hadith of Wail ibn Hujr — An-Nasa'i |
| 🟣 Hanbali | On the chest or below the chest above the navel | The hadiths reported on the subject |
📌 Note: The disagreement on hand position concerns preference, and all positions are permissible.
📌 Excessive Movement in Prayer
| School | Limit of Invalidating Movement | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| 🟡 Maliki | Three consecutive movements in one pillar without necessity | What exceeds invalidates the prayer |
| 🟢 Hanafi | What makes the observer think he is not in prayer | The reference is custom |
| 🔵 Shafi'i | Three consecutive movements with dhikr | Or what corrupts khushu' |
| 🟣 Hanbali | Excessive movement according to custom without necessity | The reference is also custom |
📌 Summary: Slight movement for a need does not invalidate prayer by consensus; as for excessive movement, it invalidates it according to the majority.
📌 Speaking in Prayer
| School | Ruling on Deliberate Speech | Ruling on Speech by Forgetfulness |
|---|---|---|
| 🟡 Maliki | Invalidates prayer in all cases | Does not invalidate if it was little and by forgetfulness |
| 🟢 Hanafi | Invalidates in all cases even for the benefit of prayer | Even returning salam invalidates prayer |
| 🔵 Shafi'i | Invalidates except for the benefit of prayer (saving a life, for example) | Does not invalidate by forgetfulness according to the correct view |
| 🟣 Hanbali | Invalidates except for the benefit of prayer or by ignorance | Does not invalidate by forgetfulness and one prostrates for forgetfulness |
📌 Benefit: One who speaks out of ignorance of the ruling or by forgetfulness, his prayer is valid according to the majority.
📌 Ruling on the Sitting of Rest (Jalsat al-Istiraha)
| School | Ruling |
|---|---|
| 🟡 Maliki | Not legislated (he does not do it) |
| 🟢 Hanafi | Not legislated |
| 🔵 Shafi'i | Sunnah (sit before rising for the next rak'a) |
| 🟣 Hanbali | Recommended for one who needs it, abandoned for one who does not |
📌 Preferred view: It is confirmed in the hadith of Malik ibn al-Huwayrith, so it is sunnah for one who needs it.
💡 Practical Tips for Preserving the Sunan and Avoiding Nullifiers
- Prepare the heart before prayer: Sit for a minute to reflect on the greatness of standing before Allah.
- Prepare the place: Appropriate lighting, clean prayer mat, remove distractions.
- Straighten the rows: Especially in congregation, this helps with tranquility.
- Lower the gaze and voice: Helps with presence of heart.
- Commit to dhikr after prayer: It completes the deficiency that occurred in the sunan.
🗺️ Summarized Mind Map
- Sunan Branch:
- Verbal sunan (opening supplication, isti'adha, amin).
- Practical sunan (raising hands, placing right over left, brief sitting).
- Nullifiers Branch:
- Major nullifiers: hadath, exposing 'awra, omitting a pillar.
- Minor nullifiers: excessive movement, turning, distraction.
🎯 Contemporary Cases

| 🟢 Hanafi | Flowing blood invalidates wudu → invalidates prayer |
| 🔵 Shafi'i | Blood does not invalidate wudu |
| 🟣 Hanbali | Abundant blood invalidates wudu |
💡 Practical advice: If bleeding is light, continue your prayer. If it's abundant, stop and renew wudu.
🗣️ Case 5: Correcting the Mistaken Imam
Situation: The imam makes a mistake in reciting a verse of Quran during prayer.
❓ Can you correct him without invalidating your prayer?
📜 View the answer
Correcting the imam is permitted:
| Rule | Application |
|---|---|
| ✅ Recite the correct verse | Permissible and recommended |
| 📖 It's considered recitation | Not "people's speech" |
| 🔔 If the imam doesn't understand | You may repeat once |
💡 Example: The imam says "Al-hamdu lillahi rabbil 'alamin" but skips a verse — you recite the missing verse to help him.
💭 Reflection
"The sunan of prayer are like the fragrance of a garden: the garden exists without them, but their presence is what makes it enchanting. One who neglects the sunan has a valid prayer but without flavor."
