Khushū' — The Soul of Prayer
Al-Khushū' — The Soul of Prayer
"Successful indeed are the believers, those who are humble in their prayer." — [Al-Mu'minūn: 1-2]
Introduction: A Prayer Without Soul?
An Empty Prayer?
You can perform all the pillars. All the obligations. All the sunnas.
And yet... your prayer may be rejected.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Indeed a man finishes his prayer and nothing is recorded for him except a tenth, a ninth, an eighth, a seventh, a sixth, a fifth, a quarter, a third, a half."
Source: Abū Dāwūd (796), aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥa (1626)
The Reality: The value of your prayer depends on the presence of your heart. This is khushū'.
Chapter 1: What is Khushū'?
Definition
Khushū' (الخُشُوع)
Linguistically: to bow, submit, humble oneself.
Technically: The presence of the heart before Allah during prayer.
It's when your body prays AND your heart prays together.
The Components of Khushū'
| Component | Description |
|---|---|
| Ḥuḍūr al-Qalb | Presence of heart — being aware you're praying |
| Fahm al-Ma'nā | Understanding what you're saying |
| Ta'ẓīm | Reverence toward Allah |
| Hayba | Respectful awe |
| Rajā' | Hope in mercy |
| Ḥayā' | Modesty before Allah's Gaze |
Khushū' in the Quran
"Successful indeed are the believers, those who are humble (khāshi'ūn) in their prayer."
— [Al-Mu'minūn: 1-2]
"Indeed, it (prayer) is difficult except for the humble."
— [Al-Baqarah: 45]
Chapter 2: The Legal Status of Khushū'
Scholars Have Differed
| Opinion | Proponents | Argument |
|---|---|---|
| Obligatory (wājib) | Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim | The verse "khāshi'ūn" is obligatory praise |
| Strongly recommended | Majority of scholars | Obligation is hard to prove formally |
| The soul of prayer | Moral consensus | Without khushū', prayer loses its meaning |
Ibn al-Qayyim: "Khushū' is the spirit of prayer. A prayer without khushū' is like a body without a soul."
Chapter 3: The Enemies of Khushū'
Enemy #1: Waswās (Satanic Whispers)
The Thief Named Khinzab
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Indeed Shayṭān comes to one of you in his prayer and confuses him until he doesn't know how much he has prayed."
Source: al-Bukhārī (1231), Muslim (389)
Remedy for Waswās
Hadith of the Remedy:
'Uthmān ibn Abi l-'Āṣ complained to the Prophet ﷺ: "The Shayṭān comes between me and my prayer."The Prophet ﷺ said: "That is a shayṭān named Khinzab. When you sense him, spit lightly three times to your left and seek refuge with Allah."
'Uthmān said: "I did that and Allah removed it from me."
Source: Muslim (2203)
Enemy #2: Rushing
| Sign | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Praying in 2 minutes | Khushū' impossible |
| Swallowing words | No reflection possible |
| No pause between positions | Heart doesn't have time to "breathe" |
Advice: Imagine it's your last prayer. You wouldn't rush.
Enemy #3: Environmental Distractions
| Distraction | Solution |
|---|---|
| Phone | Turn off BEFORE prayer |
| Television | Pray in a quiet room |
| Work thoughts | Mental break before praying |
| Attractive decoration | Pray facing a simple wall |
Enemy #4: Ignorance of Meaning
Praying Without Understanding
How can you have khushū' if you don't know what you're saying?
When you say "al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi l-'ālamīn," your heart should feel gratitude.
When you say "iyyāka na'budu," your heart should feel submission.
Without understanding, words remain empty sounds.
Chapter 4: How to Achieve Khushū'
Technique #1: Preparation Before Prayer
| Step | Description |
|---|---|
| Conscious wuḍū' | Make wuḍū' slowly, thinking about spiritual purification |
| Clean clothes | Prepare as if for a royal audience |
| Clean and quiet place | Avoid thoroughfares |
| Wait for adhān | Be ready before the time, not late |
Technique #2: The Opening Takbīr
Crossing the Threshold
When you raise your hands and say "Allāhu Akbar"...
Imagine leaving the world behind you.
You enter a sacred space between you and Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The key to prayer is purification, its opening is the takbīr."
Source: Abū Dāwūd (61), at-Tirmidhī (3)
Technique #3: Meditating on the Words
| What You Say | What You Should Feel |

| sami'a llāhu liman ḥamidah | Allah hears you! |
| rabbanā wa laka l-ḥamd | Grateful response |
| subḥāna rabbiya l-a'lā | You are at the lowest, He is at the highest |
Technique #4: Directed Gaze
| Moment | Direction of Gaze |
|---|---|
| Standing (qiyām) | Place of prostration |
| Rukū' | Between the feet |
| Sujūd | Nose on ground, eyes half-closed |
| Tashahhud | The pointing index |
Hadith: "When one of you prays, let him not raise his gaze to the sky." — Muslim (429)
Technique #5: Pray as if It's Your Last
The Prophet's ﷺ Advice
He said to a man:
"Pray the prayer of one bidding farewell."
As if it were your last prayer before death.
Source: Ibn Mājah (4171)
Chapter 5: Khushū' According to the Great Imams
Imam al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (d. 110 AH)

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim
"Khushū' is composed of: concentration, understanding, veneration, fear, hope, and modesty. When these gather in the heart, the body naturally follows."
Imam al-Ghazālī

Conclusion: The Ultimate Goal
The Conversation with Allah
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"When one of you stands to pray, he is in intimate conversation (munājāt) with his Lord."
Prayer is not an obligation to check off.
It's an appointment with the Creator of the universe.
A moment when the King of kings grants you an audience.
Pray accordingly.

May Allah grant us a humble heart and an accepted prayer
Khushū' is not a gift reserved for saints. It's a daily effort within everyone's reach.
