Lineage and breastfeeding

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Lineage and Breastfeeding — Family Bonds in Islam

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Breastfeeding makes forbidden (in marriage) what blood relation makes forbidden."

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

📖 Introduction

📜 Scene: The Surprise Discovery

At the wedding preparations...

The mother suddenly remembered: "Wait... didn't Umm Ahmad breastfeed you when you were a baby?"

The bride froze. "So... is Ahmad..."

The mother asked the scholar urgently.

The scholar asked: "How many times did she breastfeed her?"

The mother said: "I'm not sure... maybe several times..."

The scholar said:

"We need to establish this. If it was five or more satisfying feeds, they are milk siblings and cannot marry!"

🎯 Breastfeeding creates real family bonds with real consequences!

📜 Scene: Protecting Lineage

The Prophet ﷺ was very strict about lineage...

He said:

"Whoever claims to belong to other than his father, or attributes himself to other than his masters (for freed slaves), upon him is the continuous curse of Allah, the angels, and all people."

[Muslim]

⚠️ Lineage in Islam is sacred — it cannot be forged or denied!

📜 Story: The Prophet's ﷺ Milk Relationships

Thuwaybah

Thuwaybah, the freed slave of Abu Lahab, breastfed the Prophet ﷺ.

This made Abu Lahab's son (who she also fed) his milk brother.

The Prophet ﷺ honored this relationship even though it was with his enemy's family.

Halimah al-Sa'diyah

Halimah breastfed the Prophet ﷺ in the desert.

He always honored her as his milk mother.

When she visited him years later, he stood, spread his cloak for her, and treated her with the utmost respect.

🎯 Milk relationships are real and deserve honor!

🎯 Contemporary Cases

🍼 Case 1: Milk Bank

Situation: A baby is fed breast milk from a hospital milk bank (unknown donors).

❓ What is the ruling?

Complex issue:

FactorConsideration
❓ Unknown donorsCreates uncertainty
🔀 Mixed milkMay be from multiple women
📊 If identifiableNormal rada'ah rules apply
⚠️ If not identifiableCreates marriage uncertainty
⚖️ Scholars adviseAvoid if possible, or keep records

💡 Milk banks should keep records to avoid marriage complications later!

🧪 Case 2: DNA Test Reveals Different Father

Situation: A DNA test shows the child isn't the husband's biological child.

❓ What happens to lineage?

Serious situation:

FactorRuling
💍 Born in marriageSharia presumes father is husband
🧪 DNA testDoesn't automatically change lineage
⚖️ Li'an processHusband must go through proper procedure

💭 Reflection

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim — may Allah have mercy on him — said:

"Allah made the woman who nourishes a child with her milk like the woman who nourished him in her womb — both create a bond that affects marriage law. This shows Islam's appreciation for nurturing."

🎯 Both blood and milk create sacred family bonds in Islam!
