The Pillars of Hajj

📜 أَرْكَانُ الحَجّ — The Pillars of Hajj

The pillars (Arkân) are the fundamental acts without which Hajj is not valid. Unlike obligations (Wajibât), their omission cannot be compensated by a sacrifice. The pilgrim must perform them for their Hajj to be accepted.

📖 Foundational Text (النص التأسيسي)

🔷 The Hadith of Arafat

Narrated by 'Abd Ar-Rahman ibn Ya'mur Ad-Dili رضي الله عنه that the Prophet ﷺ said:

« الحَجُّ عَرَفَةُ، فَمَنْ أَدْرَكَ لَيْلَةَ عَرَفَةَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الْفَجْرِ مِنْ لَيْلَةِ جَمْعٍ فَقَدْ تَمَّ حَجُّهُ »

"Hajj is Arafat. Whoever reaches Arafat before dawn of the night of Muzdalifa, their Hajj is complete."

🔷 The Verse of Tawaf

﴿ ثُمَّ لْيَقْضُوا تَفَثَهُمْ وَلْيُوفُوا نُذُورَهُمْ وَلْيَطَّوَّفُوا بِالْبَيْتِ الْعَتِيقِ ﴾

"Then let them end their untidiness, fulfill their vows, and perform Tawaf around the Ancient House." [Al-Hajj: 29]

📐 Hadith Analysis

SegmentAnalysis
الحَجُّ عَرَفَةُNominal sentence — subject and predicate
عَرَفَةُPredicate in nominative (Hajj = Arafat)
مَنْ أَدْرَكَConditional pronoun (whoever reaches)
فَقَدْ تَمَّConditional response (then it is complete)

💡 Rhetorical Point

The expression "الحَجُّ عَرَفَةُ" is a metonymy (مجاز مرسل): the entire Hajj is identified with just one of its pillars, showing the paramount importance of Wuquf. It's like saying "prayer is prostration" — highlighting the noblest element.

🎯 Contemporary Cases

🚗 Case 1: Traffic Jam on the Day of Arafat

Situation: Ahmad is stuck in a massive traffic jam on the 9th of Dhul-Hijja. His bus only arrives at Arafat after Maghrib, and he hears some say that the time for Arafat ends at sunset.

❓ Is his Hajj valid if he arrives after Maghrib?

📜 View the Ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Time of WuqufFrom Zawal of 9th until dawn of 10th
Arrival after Maghrib✅ Valid — time is not over
Maliki positionA moment at night suffices

💡 Key Rule: Wuquf at Arafat remains valid until dawn of the 10th Dhul-Hijja. Arriving after Maghrib is perfectly valid. The Hajj is complete, alhamdulillah.

🤒 Case 2: Ill on the Day of Arafat

Situation: Khadija falls seriously ill on the 9th of Dhul-Hijja. She is transported by ambulance to Arafat but remains unconscious throughout the entire duration of the standing.

❓ Is her Wuquf valid?

📜 View the Ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Physical presence✅ Yes, she was at Arafat
Consciousness❌ Absent (unconscious)
Maliki positionConsciousness is required

💡 Key Rule: According to Malikis, Wuquf requires a minimum level of consciousness (يقظة). If she was unconscious the entire time, her Wuquf is invalid and her Hajj does not count this year. She must redo it the following year.

🌙 Case 3: Tawaf al-Ifadah Delayed Several Days

Situation: Omar performed Wuquf at Arafat and the rites at Mina, but due to extreme crowds, he could only perform Tawaf al-Ifadah on the 15th of Dhul-Hijja. During this time, he remained in a state of "partial desacralization" (tahallul awwal).

❓ Is his Tawaf valid? Is there a penalty?

📜 View the Ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Permitted delayUntil end of Dhul-Hijja without penalty
Desacralization statePartial — conjugal relations forbidden
After Dhul-HijjaDam obligatory

💡 Key Rule: Tawaf al-Ifadah on the 15th of Dhul-Hijja is valid without penalty. However, conjugal relations remained forbidden until the Tawaf. If delayed past the end of Dhul-Hijja, a Dam becomes obligatory according to Malikis.

📍 Case 4: Lost in Mina and Missed Arafat

Situation: Youssef, an elderly pilgrim, got lost in the crowd at Mina on the 9th of Dhul-Hijja. Disoriented, he never found his group and never reached Arafat before dawn of the 10th.

❓ What recourse does he have?

📜 View the Ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Missed Wuquf❌ Pillar not accomplished
ConsequenceHajj invalid
RecourseExit Ihram through 'Umra

💡 Key Rule: Wuquf at Arafat is the supreme pillar. If missed, the Hajj is invalid. He must exit Ihram by performing an 'Umra (Tawaf + Sa'i + Taqsir), then return the following year to redo Hajj.

🏃 Case 5: Menstruating Woman — Delayed Tawaf al-Ifadah

Situation: Fatima gets her period on the 10th of Dhul-Hijja and the following days. She cannot perform Tawaf al-Ifadah before her scheduled return flight on the 14th of Dhul-Hijja.

❓ What should she do?

📜 View the Ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Tawaf with menses❌ Forbidden for Malikis (purity is a condition)
Option 1Delay departure if possible
Option 2Stay until purification
Extreme necessityConsult a scholar on site

💡 Key Rule: Tawaf al-Ifadah is a pillar that requires ritual purity according to Malikis. She must wait for her purification to perform this Tawaf. If impossible, she must consult a scholar for possible options (some Hanafis permit it with Dam in extreme necessity).

💭 Reflection

"The pillars of Hajj are like the foundations of a house: without them, nothing stands. They represent the very essence of this worship, the minimum without which the journey to Allah is not accomplished."

— Wisdom of Hajj scholars
