Tawaf and Sa'i

📜 الطَّوَافُ وَالسَّعْيُ — Tawaf and Sa'i

Tawaf (circumambulation) around the Ka'ba and Sa'i (walking) between Safa and Marwa are among the most emblematic rites of pilgrimage. Tawaf al-Ifada is a pillar of Hajj, while Sa'i is also a pillar according to the majority of scholars. These two rites connect the pilgrim to prophetic history: Tawaf recalls the devotion of prophets since Ibrahim عليه السلام, and Sa'i commemorates Hajar's عليها السلام search for water for her son Isma'il.

📖 Foundational Quranic Texts

﴿ وَلْيَطَّوَّفُوا بِالْبَيْتِ الْعَتِيقِ ﴾
"And let them circumambulate the Ancient House"
— [Al-Hajj: 29]

"Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the rites of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj or 'Umrah, there is no blame upon him for walking between them"
— [Al-Baqara: 158]

📜 Reference Hadith

From Jabir رضي الله عنه describing the Prophet's ﷺ Hajj: "When we arrived at the House with him, he touched the Corner (Black Stone), then performed Raml (brisk walking) for three circuits and walked normally for four. Then he proceeded to the Maqam of Ibrahim and recited: 'And take the Maqam of Ibrahim as a place of prayer' — then he prayed two rak'at."

— [Muslim (1218)]

Imam Malik رحمه اللهAl-Muwatta'"Tawaf al-Ifada is the obligatory Tawaf (of Hajj), it is the Tawaf of the rite (tawaf az-ziyara), and without it Hajj is not complete."
Ibn Rushd رحمه اللهBidayat al-Mujtahid"Scholars are unanimous on the obligation of Tawaf al-Ifada. They differ on Sa'i: the majority considers it a pillar, the Hanafis consider it obligatory (wajib) but not a pillar."
Al-Qurtubi رحمه اللهTafsir"The expression 'no blame' was revealed because some Companions hesitated to perform Sa'i, thinking it was a practice of Jahiliyya. The verse confirms its obligation."

Neglecting two rak'at after TawafConfirmed Sunnah not to be abandoned

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Can I do Tawaf without Wudu?

🟡 According to Malikis, no. Wudu is a condition of validity. According to Hanafis, Tawaf is valid but with fidya.

Q2: How many laps is Sa'i?

7 laps: Safa → Marwa (1), Marwa → Safa (2), etc., until ending at Marwa (7).

Q3: What if I lose count of circuits?

Take the lower number you are certain of and continue.

Q4: Should women do Ramal?

No. Ramal is for men only, both in Tawaf and Sa'i.

🎯 Contemporary Cases

🦽 Case 1: Tawaf in wheelchair — pushed by someone

Situation: An elderly person who cannot walk performs Tawaf in a wheelchair, pushed by their son. Has the son also performed a Tawaf? Must the elderly person have the intention?

❓ Is this Tawaf valid for both?

📜 View the ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Condition of walkingNot required — Tawaf is valid while sitting
Intention of person pushedObligatory for them
Tawaf of the pusherCounts if they intend it

💡 Key Rule: Tawaf in a wheelchair is perfectly valid. The person being pushed must have their own intention. The pusher can simultaneously intend their own Tawaf while helping, thus receiving double reward.

📱 Case 2: Reciting Quran on phone during Tawaf

Situation: A pilgrim performs Tawaf while reading Quran on their phone. They don't know any supplications by heart and prefer reading rather than remaining silent.

❓ Is this practice permitted?

📜 View the ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Quran recitationPermitted during Tawaf
Phone usageReading tool, no prohibition
Better than silenceYes, Tawaf is prayer (speech permitted)

💡 Key Rule: Reciting Quran during Tawaf is permitted and meritorious. The phone as a reading support does not diminish the merit. However, it is preferable to memorize some prophetic supplications and invoke freely.

🤰 Case 3: Pregnant woman fatigued — prolonged break during Sa'i

Situation: A woman 7 months pregnant performs Sa'i. On her 4th lap, she is exhausted and must sit for 45 minutes. Can she resume where she stopped?

❓ Is the continuity of Sa'i broken?

📜 View the ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Continuity of Sa'iLess strict than Tawaf
Rest breakPermitted if justified
Time limitNo strict limit according to majority

💡 Key Rule: Sa'i can be interrupted for a valid reason (fatigue, physiological need). She resumes from the lap where she stopped. Pregnancy is a major legal excuse. Using a wheelchair if available is advised.

🚽 Case 4: Interruption for bathroom — where to resume?

Situation: On the 5th circuit of Tawaf, a pilgrim urgently needs to use the bathroom. He leaves the Tawaf, relieves himself, renews Wudu, then returns. Where does he resume?

❓ Must he restart the Tawaf or continue?

📜 View the ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Cause of interruptionPhysiological need — valid excuse
Wudu renewedCondition to resume (for Malikis)
Point of resumptionFrom the stopping point

💡 Key Rule: According to Malikis, if the interruption is long, Tawaf must restart from the beginning. According to other schools, one resumes from the circuit where they stopped after renewing Wudu. For precaution, restarting the current circuit is preferable.

🌊 Case 5: Tawaf during rain — slipping and falling

Situation: During Tawaf in the rain, the floor becomes slippery. A pilgrim slips and falls on their 3rd circuit. They get up but are disoriented. How should they continue?

❓ Must they restart the circuit or the entire Tawaf?

📜 View the ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Involuntary interruptionDoes not invalidate Tawaf
Lost orientationResume from most probable point
In case of doubtTake the lowest certain number

💡 Key Rule: Falling does not invalidate Tawaf. The pilgrim gets up and resumes from where they estimate they stopped. In case of doubt about the number of circuits, take the lower number they are certain of (e.g., doubt between 3 and 4 → count 3).

💭 Reflection

"Tawaf is a prayer around Allah's House. Every step is a supplication, every circuit an elevation."

— Teaching of the scholars

✅ Practical Action / Challenge

Practical Preparation:

  1. Memorize the supplication between Yemeni Corner and Black Stone (Rabbana atina...)
  2. Learn to distinguish Idtiba' and Ramal — practice the movements at home
  3. Visualize the Sa'i route with the green markers via map/video

🤲 Du'a of the Day

"There is no deity except Allah Alone, without partner. To Him belongs the dominion and the praise, and He is Omnipotent"

(To be recited on Safa and Marwa, facing the Ka'ba)
