Arafat, Muzdalifa and Mina

📜 عَرَفَةُ وَمُزْدَلِفَةُ وَمِنَى — Arafat, Muzdalifa and Mina

These three sacred locations constitute the very heart of the pilgrimage. Arafat, Muzdalifa, and Mina form a spiritual journey that every pilgrim must accomplish in a specific order and at determined times. The Wuquf at Arafat is the very essence of Hajj, the night at Muzdalifa is a major obligation, and the stay at Mina with its stoning rites crowns this spiritual journey. Understanding these stages is essential to perform a valid and accepted Hajj.

📖 Foundational Text (النص التأسيسي)

The Quran

"Then when you depart from Arafat, remember Allah at the Sacred Monument (Muzdalifa). And remember Him as He has guided you, for indeed, you were before that among those astray."
— [Al-Baqara: 198]

"Then depart from the place from where the people depart and ask forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."
— [Al-Baqara: 199]

"And remember Allah during the numbered days. Then whoever hastens in two days, there is no sin upon him, and whoever delays, there is no sin upon him, for him who fears Allah."
— [Al-Baqara: 203]

The Sunnah

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Hajj is Arafat. Whoever arrives on the night of Jam' (Muzdalifa) before the dawn of Fajr has attained the Hajj."
— [At-Tirmidhi (889), An-Nasa'i (3016)]

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best supplication is the supplication of the Day of Arafat, and the best thing that I and the prophets before me have said is: There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs praise, and He is over all things capable."
— [At-Tirmidhi (3585)]

Imam Malik رحمه اللهAl-Mudawwana"Whoever misses Arafat has missed the Hajj. And whoever arrives at Arafat at night, before the dawn of the Day of Sacrifice, even for an instant, has attained the Hajj."
Imam Ibn Rushd رحمه اللهBidayat al-Mujtahid"The scholars are unanimous that the Wuquf at Arafat is the most important pillar of Hajj, because the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Hajj is Arafat.' And they differ on the status of the night at Muzdalifa and the stoning of the pillars."
Imam an-Nawawi رحمه اللهAl-Majmu'"The standing at Arafat begins after the zenith of the 9th day and extends until the dawn of the 10th. It is obligatory to stay until sunset according to our school, and it is a recommendation according to others."
Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه اللهZad al-Ma'ad"Muzdalifa is called 'al-Mash'ar al-Haram' (the Sacred Monument), and 'Jam'' because pilgrims gather there, and 'Muzdalifa' because one draws near to Allah after departing from Arafat."

🌍 Modern Applications (التطبيقات المعاصرة)

6.1 Stoning Before Zenith on Tashriq Days

  • Contemporary view: Several scholars permit stoning before zenith in case of large crowds, for ease and to avoid deadly stampedes.
  • Opinion of the Islamic Fiqh Assembly: Permissible in case of compelling necessity (الضرورة).

6.2 The Levels of the Jamarat

  • All three constructed levels are valid for stoning.
  • Stoning from any level counts, as the pillars are connected.

6.3 Night at Muzdalifa with Modern Crowds

  • Weak persons, women with children, and the sick may leave after midnight.
  • Their companions may leave with them.
  • In case of total impossibility of reaching Muzdalifa (accident, blockage), some scholars excuse with a dam.

6.4 Tawaf al-Ifada on the Day of Sacrifice

  • Can be delayed until the end of the Tashriq days.
  • It is preferable to do it on the Day of Sacrifice to follow the Sunnah.

⚠️ Common Mistakes (الأخطاء الشائعة)

MistakeCorrection
Believing climbing Jabal ar-Rahma is obligatoryThis is an innovation, the entire plain of Arafat is valid for Wuquf
Leaving Arafat before sunsetObligation to stay until Maghrib according to the majority
Praying Maghrib and 'Isha separately on the roadThey must be combined at Muzdalifa
Believing the pebble must hit the pillarIt suffices for the stone to fall in the basin
Throwing all pebbles at onceEach pebble must be thrown separately with Takbir
Collecting pebbles only from MuzdalifaThey can be collected from anywhere
Cursing Satan while stoningThe Sunnah is only Takbir
Leaving Mina after Maghrib on the 12th (in a hurry)One must leave before sunset otherwise stay for the 13th

❓ FAQ (الأسئلة الشائعة)

Q1: What should I do if I arrive at Arafat after sunset on the 9th?

As long as you arrive before the dawn of the 10th, your Hajj is valid. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever arrives before dawn has attained the Hajj."

Q2: Can I sleep the whole time at Arafat without making supplications?

Your Wuquf is valid, but you lose an immense reward. It is the best day for supplications.

Q3: Can I delegate someone to stone on my behalf if I am tired?

Fatigue alone does not justify delegation. There must be real incapacity (illness, inability to walk, etc.).

Q4: What happens if I miss the night at Muzdalifa?

According to the Malikis and the majority, you owe a dam (sacrifice). But if you had a valid excuse, nothing is owed.

Q5: Can I stone after Maghrib on the Tashriq days?

Yes, the stoning time extends until the dawn of the following day, but after sunset is makruh (disliked) except for necessity.

Q6: If I am in a hurry, can I leave Mina on the 12th day?

Yes, but you must leave before sunset. If the sun sets while you are at Mina, you must stay for the stoning of the 13th.

🎯 Contemporary Cases

🚌 Case 1: Bus breakdown before Arafat — arrived at night

Situation: A group of pilgrims is en route to Arafat on the 9th of Dhul-Hijja when their bus breaks down. After hours of repairs, they only arrive at Arafat at 11:00 PM, well after sunset.

❓ Is their Hajj valid?

📜 View the ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Arrival timeBefore dawn of the 10th Dhul-Hijja
Duration of presenceEven a moment suffices
Applicable hadith"Whoever reaches Arafat before the dawn of Fajr has attained Hajj"

💡 Key Rule: The Hajj is perfectly valid. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever reaches Arafat before the dawn of Fajr has attained Hajj." What matters is being there before dawn, even for an instant.

🏨 Case 2: Group housed in hotel outside Mina's limits

Situation: A group of pilgrims discovers that their hotel, sold as "in Mina," is actually located in Aziziyah, outside the official limits of Mina. They spend the Tashriq nights there.

❓ Do they owe compensation?

📜 View the ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Obligation of MabitSpending the night within Mina's limits
Actual situationOutside limits unknowingly
CompensationDam (sacrifice) for each missed night

💡 Key Rule: Staying outside Mina during Tashriq nights requires a dam according to the majority of scholars. However, if pilgrims cannot find a place in Mina (valid excuse), some scholars exempt them. Always verify the exact location before booking.

📍 Case 3: GPS indicating Arafat but border zone

Situation: A pilgrim follows their GPS which indicates "Arafat" but they are actually parked at Wadi 'Uranah, outside the official limits. They remain there all afternoon without knowing.

❓ Is their Wuquf valid?

📜 View the ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Wadi 'UranahZone outside Arafat's limits
Wuquf in this zoneDoes not count
ConsequenceHajj not accomplished if not rectified

💡 Key Rule: Wuquf at Wadi 'Uranah does not count. If the pilgrim realizes their error before dawn of the 10th, they must move to Arafat immediately. If they only realize after, their Hajj is missed and must be made up the following year. Verifying official limits is crucial.

🌙 Case 4: Departure from Muzdalifa before midnight — extreme fatigue

Situation: An elderly woman accompanied by her daughter is exhausted. She asks to leave Muzdalifa at 10:00 PM as she can no longer bear it. Her group refuses, saying they must wait until midnight.

❓ Can she leave before midnight?

📜 View the ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Category of personWeak (elderly person)
Maliki opinionStopping even briefly suffices
Permission to leave earlyGranted to the weak

💡 Key Rule: Weak persons (elderly, sick, women with children) may leave Muzdalifa before midnight. The permission was granted by the Prophet ﷺ who allowed the weak members of his family to leave early. Her companion may leave with her.

🏕️ Case 5: Tent collapsed at Mina — spending the night outside

Situation: A violent storm collapses a group's tent at Mina. They spend the night outside, in the walkways, waiting for repairs.

❓ Have they fulfilled the Mabit (night at Mina)?

📜 View the ruling

📖 Analysis:

CriterionApplication
Location of the nightWithin Mina's limits
Tent conditionNot required — location is what matters
Emergency situationDoes not affect validity

💡 Key Rule: Mabit at Mina is valid as long as one spends the night within Mina's limits, whether under a tent, in a hotel, or outside. The Prophet ﷺ and Companions slept under the stars. The tent is a modern comfort, not a condition.

📝 Closing Supplication

O Allah, grant us an accepted pilgrimage, a rewarded effort, and a forgiven sin. O Allah, make us among those who stood at Arafat and were forgiven, who spent the night at Muzdalifa and had their deeds accepted, and who stoned the pillars and were freed from the Fire.
