[Al-Baqarah: 255]

English Translation

« Allah! There is no deity worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. »

💎 The Prophetic Method

From 'Ā'ishah — may Allah be pleased with her:

« The Prophet ﷺ, every night when going to his bed, would join his hands together, blow into them lightly, and recite: "Qul huwa Allāhu aḥad", "Qul a'ūdhu birabbi al-falaq", and "Qul a'ūdhu birabbi an-nās". Then he would wipe his hands over as much of his body as he could reach, beginning with his head, face, and the front of his body. He would do this three times. »

💎 Better Than a Servant

From 'Alī — may Allah be pleased with him:

Fāṭimah — may Allah be pleased with her — complained to the Prophet ﷺ about the pain in her hands from grinding with the millstone. Some captives were brought to the Prophet ﷺ, so she went to ask for a servant but didn't find him. She mentioned this to 'Ā'ishah. When the Prophet ﷺ came, 'Ā'ishah told him about it. The Prophet ﷺ came to us after we had gone to our beds. We went to stand up, but he said: « Stay where you are. » Then he came and sat between us until I felt the coolness of his feet on my chest. He said: « Shall I not direct you to something better than what you asked me for? When you go to your bed, glorify Allah 33 times, praise Him 33 times, and proclaim His greatness 34 times. This is better for you than a servant. »

[Reported by al-Bukhārī: 5361, Muslim: 2727]

🤲 ⑥ Invocation 6: Allāhumma aslamtu nafsī ilayka

[Al-Baqarah: 285-286]

English Translation

« The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."

Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people." »

📚 Evidence from the Qur'an and Sunnah

From the Noble Qur'an

« Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought. »

[Az-Zumar: 42]

« And it is He who takes your souls by night and knows what you have committed by day. »

[Al-An'ām: 60]

⚠️ Precautions and Common Mistakes

🚫 Common Errors

ErrorCorrection
❌ Sleeping without invocations✅ Maintain these invocations
❌ Sleeping on one's stomach✅ Sleep on the right side
❌ Playing recorded invocations✅ Recite them yourself
❌ Sleeping in a state of major ritual impurity✅ Perform ghusl or at least wuḍū'
❌ Staying up late without benefit✅ Sleep early

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

« Is wuḍū' before sleep obligatory? »

Answer: It is strongly recommended (sunnah mu'akkadah), especially for one who is in a state of major ritual impurity.

« Should I recite all these invocations every night? »

Answer: Yes, ideally maintain all of them. If that is difficult, then at minimum:

  • « Bismika Allāhumma amūtu wa aḥyā »
  • Āyat al-Kursī
  • The three protecting surahs

« If I forget the invocations and fall asleep, should I get up? »

Answer: If you remember before falling asleep completely, recite them. If you have already fallen asleep, there is no blame.
