Meal Supplications

📿 أَدْعِيَةُ الطَّعَامِ — Meal Invocations

The Prophet ﷺ said: « When one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah. If he forgets to mention the name of Allah at the beginning, let him say: "Bismillāhi fī awwalihi wa ākhirihi" » [Abū Dāwūd: 3767]

💎 Merit of Mentioning Allah's Name

From 'Umar ibn Abī Salamah — may Allah be pleased with him — who said:

I was a young boy under the care of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and my hand used to wander around the dish. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: « O young boy, mention the name of Allah (say Bismillāh), eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you. »

From 'Ā'ishah — may Allah be pleased with her — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

« When one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah the Most High. If he forgets to mention the name of Allah the Most High at the beginning, let him say: "Bismillāhi fī awwalihi wa ākhirihi" (In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end). »

💎 Gratitude for the Blessing

From Abū Umāmah — may Allah be pleased with him:

The Prophet ﷺ, when his meal was cleared away, would say: « Al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī aṭ'amanā wa saqānā, wa ja'alanā muslimīn »

💎 Blessed Praise

💎 Supplication for the Host

From 'Abdullāh ibn Busr — may Allah be pleased with him:

The Prophet ﷺ came to stay with his father, so they brought him food and watbah (a milk dish). He ate from it, then dates were brought and he would eat them, placing the stones between his two fingers (the index and middle fingers together). Then a drink was brought and he drank it, then passed it to the one on his right. When he stood to leave, my father took hold of his mount's bridle and said: "Supplicate to Allah for us." He said: « Allāhumma bārik lahum fīmā razaqtahum, waghfir lahum, warḥamhum »

English Translation

« May those who are fasting break their fast with you, may the righteous eat your food, and may the angels send prayers upon you. »

💎 The Fasting Person's Supplication for the Host

From Anas ibn Mālik — may Allah be pleased with him:

The Prophet ﷺ came to Sa'd ibn 'Ubādah who brought bread and olive oil. He ate, then the Prophet ﷺ said: « Afṭara 'indakumu aṣ-ṣā'imūn, wa akala ṭa'āmakumu al-abrār, wa ṣallat 'alaykumu al-malā'ikah »

« O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship. »

« Indeed Allah is pleased with a servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it, or drinks a drink and praises Him for it. »

« Must I say Bismillāh for every bite? »

Answer: No, it suffices at the beginning of the meal, but if you forget, then say: « Bismillāhi fī awwalihi wa ākhirihi ».


« If I eat with a non-Muslim, should I say the Basmala? »

Answer: ✅ Yes, say the Basmala even if silently.


« Is it permissible to eat with the left hand due to an excuse? »

Answer: Yes, for a valid excuse (injury, illness), otherwise eating is with the right hand.


« What should I say if I am offered food I don't like? »

Answer:

  • Best: Do not criticize the food « The Prophet ﷺ never criticized food »
