A Respected Man
Even before Islam, Abū Bakr was an exceptional man:
- Wealthy cloth merchant, among the most prosperous in Quraysh
- Expert genealogist — he knew the history of every Arab family
- Man of trust — he never drank alcohol, even during the Jāhiliyya

— Ibn Isḥāq
The Friendship that Preceded Prophethood
Muḥammad ﷺ and Abū Bakr were two years apart in age. They shared:
- The rejection of idolatry
- Modesty and nobility of character
- The quest for a higher truth
This friendship prepared Abū Bakr to become the first to believe.
⚡ The Moment of Truth
The Night Everything Changed

📜 The Night Everything Changed
The year 610 CE. The Prophet ﷺ has just received the first revelation in the cave of Ḥirā'.
Trembling, he returns home to Khadīja who comforts him.
Then he goes to see his closest friend...
The Prophet ﷺ: "O Abū Bakr, Allah has sent me as a messenger to mankind."
Abū Bakr: [Without hesitation] "You speak the truth. I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah."
No doubt. No question. No hesitation.
"I never invited anyone to Islam without them hesitating, except Abū Bakr."
— The Prophet ﷺ
It is for this immediate and absolute faith that he received the title of al-Ṣiddīq — the one who believes instantly and completely.
🏆 His Accomplishments for Islam
1. The Liberator of Slaves
Abū Bakr used his immense fortune to buy and free tortured Muslim slaves:
| Freed Slave | Their Story |
|---|---|
| Bilāl ibn Rabāḥ | Tortured under burning rocks, repeating "Aḥad, Aḥad" |
| 'Āmir ibn Fuhayra | Became his free servant and companion |
| Umm 'Ubays | Persecuted female slave |
| Zunayra | Lost her sight under torture, Allah restored it |
| Al-Nahdiyya and her daughter | Tortured by their mistress |
| Labība | Slave of Banū Mu'ammil |
His father Abū Quḥāfa, still a pagan, said to him:
"O my son, I see you freeing weak slaves. Why don't you free strong men who could protect you?"
Abū Bakr replied:
"O father, I only seek what is with Allah."
And Allah revealed about him:
﴾ وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا الْأَتْقَى الَّذِي يُؤْتِي مَالَهُ يَتَزَكَّىٰ ﴿
"But the most pious will be kept away from it, he who gives his wealth to purify himself"
— [Sūrah Al-Layl: 17-18]
2. The Companion of the Cave
When the Prophet ﷺ had to flee Mecca, only one man accompanied him: Abū Bakr.
The scene in the cave of Thawr:
The assassins of Quraysh were at the entrance of the cave. Abū Bakr was trembling — not for himself, but for the Prophet ﷺ.
He whispered: "O Messenger of Allah, if one of them looked beneath his feet, he would see us!"
The Prophet ﷺ responded with absolute serenity:
"يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ، مَا ظَنُّكَ بِاثْنَيْنِ اللهُ ثَالِثُهُمَا"
"O Abū Bakr, what do you think of two people whose third is Allah?"
And Allah immortalized this moment:
﴾ إِلَّا تَنصُرُوهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ اللَّهُ إِذْ أَخْرَجَهُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ثَانِيَ اثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِي الْغَارِ ﴿
"If you do not aid him, Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved expelled him, the second of two, when they were in the cave."
— [Sūrah Al-Tawba: 40]
"The second of two" — a title no one else shares.
3. The Complete Gift
💰 Preparation for the Expedition of Tabūk
The Prophet ﷺ asked for contributions for the army. 'Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb brought half of his wealth, thinking he would surpass Abū Bakr for once.
Then Abū Bakr arrived with... everything he owned.
The Prophet ﷺ: "What have you left for your family?"
🟢 Abū Bakr: "I have left them Allah and His Messenger."
'Umar bowed his head and said:
🟢 'Umar: "I will never be able to surpass him in anything."
4. The First Caliph
💔 After the Death of the Prophet ﷺ — 12 Rabī' al-Awwal 11 AH
The community was in shock. Some refused to believe. 'Umar himself, sword in hand, threatened anyone who would say the Prophet ﷺ had died.
It was Abū Bakr who calmed the storm with these immortal words:
🟢 Abū Bakr: "مَنْ كَانَ يَعْبُدُ مُحَمَّدًا فَإِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا قَدْ مَاتَ، وَمَنْ كَانَ يَعْبُدُ اللهَ فَإِنَّ اللهَ حَيٌّ لَا يَمُوتُ — Whoever worshipped Muḥammad, let him know that Muḥammad has died. And whoever worshipped Allah, let him know that Allah is Ever-Living and never dies."
Then he recited:
🟢 Abū Bakr: "﴿ وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلَّا رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ ﴾"
'Umar collapsed:
🟢 'Umar: "It was as if I had never heard that verse before..."
His legs could no longer support him.
😢 His Trials
The Persecution
Abū Bakr was beaten by the Meccans. One day, 'Utba ibn Rabī'a struck him so violently in the face with his studded sandals that one could no longer distinguish his nose from his forehead.
He was carried unconscious to his home. When he regained consciousness, his first question was:
"How is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"
The Loss of His Friend
The death of the Prophet ﷺ was the greatest trial of his life. But he bore it with dignity.
"He entered the room where the Prophet ﷺ lay, uncovered his face, kissed him and wept saying: 'How beautiful you are, living and dead, O Messenger of Allah.'"
— 'Ā'isha

The Companions understood the message.
💎 Key Lessons
1. Faith Without Hesitation
When he heard about the Isrā' and Mi'rāj, he didn't say "Wait, let me verify." He said: "If he said it, it is true."
This is faith: complete trust in Allah and His Messenger, without negotiation.
2. Friendship That Transcends
He accompanied the Prophet ﷺ in the cave, during the hijra, in good times and bad. Their friendship wasn't just nice words — it was real sacrifice in decisive moments.
Are our friendships at this level?
3. Generosity That Astounds
When asked: "What did you leave for your family?" He replied: "Allah and His Messenger."
The question isn't: how much do I give? But: how much do I keep for myself?
4. The Leader Who Invites Correction
"I have been given authority over you, but I am not the best among you. If I do well, help me. If I do wrong, correct me."
A true leader is not afraid of criticism — he seeks it.
5. Firmness When Everyone Wavers
After the Prophet ﷺ died, tribes apostatized. 'Umar said: "Leave them!" But Abū Bakr:
"By Allah, if anyone withholds even a camel's rope that they used to give to the Prophet ﷺ, I will fight them for it."
The truth is not negotiable.
