Taqwa and Good Character
1. Introduction and Context
A Comprehensive Guidance for Life
This great hadith constitutes a complete prophetic guidance that encompasses the three fundamental dimensions of a Muslim's life: their relationship with Allah, their relationship with themselves, and their relationship with others.
The Prophet ﷺ addressed these words to two of his most illustrious Companions, Abū Dharr and Mu'ādh رضي الله عنهما, transmitting to them a spiritual provision for life's journey.
This hadith is considered by scholars as one of the foundations of Islamic ethics, as it unites piety towards Allah (التقوى), repentance and rectification of faults (التوبة), and excellence in behavior with others (حسن الخلق).

5. In-Depth Explanation (Sharh)
Imam An-Nawawi رحمه الله
An-Nawawi comments in Al-Arba'īn:
"This hadith is of considerable importance. It contains essential recommendations and unites the rights of Allah and the rights of servants. The first recommendation concerns the relationship with Allah through Taqwa, the second concerns the relationship with oneself through repentance and rectification, and the third concerns the relationship with creation through good conduct."
"The expression 'ḥaythumā kunta' (wherever you are) indicates that Taqwa must be maintained at all times, in all places, in public and in private."
Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali رحمه الله
In Jāmi' al-'Ulūm wal-Ḥikam, Ibn Rajab develops:
"This hadith contains all the foundations of Islamic ethics. Taqwa is the foundation of all good, for whoever fears Allah does what He commands and leaves what He forbids, in secret as in public."
"As for following up the bad deed with a good one, this includes sincere repentance (التوبة النصوح) and the good works that erase sins, like the five prayers, fasting Ramadan, and other acts of worship."
Imam Al-Mubarakfuri رحمه الله
In Tuḥfat al-Aḥwadhī, he explains:
"The statement 'khāliq an-nās bi khuluqin ḥasan' (treat people with good character) encompasses all social interactions: gentleness, forbearance, forgiveness, cheerfulness, kindness in words and deeds, helping others, and repelling harm with good."
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله
In his works, Ibn al-Qayyim clarifies:
"Taqwa is the spirit of religion and the secret of success in this world and the Hereafter. It is of two degrees: public Taqwa, which prevents apparent sins, and private Taqwa, which prevents hidden sins. The second is higher and more difficult."
6. The Three Recommendations of the Hadith
First Recommendation: Taqwa
"Fear Allah wherever you are"
This recommendation implies:

"Follow up a bad deed with a good deed and it will erase it"
This includes:
- Sincere repentance (التوبة)
- Good works that erase sins
- Ablution and prayers
- Charity and fasting
- Any good deed performed after a sin
Third Recommendation: Good Character
"Treat people with good character"
Manifestations of good character:
- A smiling and welcoming face
- Gentle and kind speech
- Patience with others' wrongs
- Forgiveness and clemency
- Help and mutual support
7. The Definition of Taqwa According to the Salaf
Definition of Talq ibn Habib رحمه الله
"Taqwa is to act in obedience to Allah, upon a light from Allah, hoping for Allah's reward; and to leave disobedience to Allah, upon a light from Allah, fearing Allah's punishment."
Definition of 'Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه
"Taqwa is: fear of the Majestic (الجليل), acting according to the Revelation (التنزيل), contentment with little (القليل), and preparation for the day of departure (يوم الرحيل)."
Definition of Ibn Mas'ūd رضي الله عنه
"Taqwa of Allah is that He be obeyed and not disobeyed, remembered and not forgotten, thanked and not denied."
8. The Levels of Taqwa
First Level: Avoiding Sins
This is the fundamental level:
- Abandoning major sins (الكبائر)
- Avoiding minor sins (الصغائر)
- Fleeing from manifest prohibitions
Second Level: Fulfilling Obligations

- The five prayers at their times
- Fasting Ramadan
- Obligatory Zakat

9. Good Deeds Erase Bad Deeds
Quranic Foundation
Allah تعالى says:
"And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember." [Hūd: 114]
Expiating Actions (المكفرات)
| Action | Proof |
|---|---|
| The five prayers | "The five prayers... expiate what is between them" [Muslim] |
| Friday to Friday | "From one Friday to the next is an expiation for what is between them" [Muslim] |

| Accepted Hajj | "Has no reward except Paradise" [Bukhari] |
| Ablution | "Sins come out with the water" [Muslim] |

Conditions for Erasure
For good deeds to erase bad deeds:
- Avoiding major sins: they require specific repentance
- Sincerity: the action must be for Allah
- Conformity: according to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
10. Good Character (حُسْن الخُلُق)
Definition of Good Character
The Prophet ﷺ described good character:
"Righteousness is good character. And sin is what wavers in your heart and you dislike that people would discover it." [Muslim]

| Speech | Kind, respectful, truthful |

11. Taqwa in Private: The Ultimate Test
The Importance of Private Taqwa
True Taqwa is manifested when one is alone:
- No human observer, only Allah's gaze
- No reputation to protect, only sincerity
- This is where true faith is revealed
The Hadith of the Three in the Cave
The Prophet ﷺ narrated the story of three men trapped in a cave. One of them invoked Allah by a good deed done in secret: he had renounced committing a sin with a woman when he had every means to do so, solely out of fear of Allah. [Bukhari and Muslim]
Statement of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه
"Take account of yourselves before you are taken to account, weigh your deeds before they are weighed, and prepare for the great presentation before Allah."
