Actions According to Intentions

📜 الأعمال بالنيات — Actions are Judged by Intentions

This hadith is the cornerstone of the entire religion. Scholars have placed it as an introduction to their works because it is the criterion for the acceptance of deeds.

📖 Text of the Hadith (متن الحديث)

🔷 Arabic Text with Full Tashkil

On the authority of the Commander of the Faithful, Abu Hafs 'Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه who said:

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:

🔷 Precise Translation

"Actions are only judged by intentions, and each person will only receive what they truly intended.

Whoever's migration was for Allah and His Messenger, their migration is for Allah and His Messenger.

And whoever's migration was for worldly gain they sought to acquire, or a woman they wished to marry, their migration is only towards what they migrated for."

3️⃣ The Example of Hijrah (التمثيل بالهجرة)

The Prophet ﷺ gives a concrete example:

Type of MigrationIntentionResult
Hijrah for AllahTo Allah and His Messenger✅ Immense reward, accepted deed
Hijrah for DunyaFor worldly gain❌ No spiritual reward
Hijrah for marriageFor a woman to marry❌ No reward of Hijrah

📜 The Story of "Muhajir Umm Qays"

Among those who emigrated from Mecca to Medina, there was a man who emigrated not for Allah, but to marry a woman named Umm Qays.

The Companions رضي الله عنهم called him: "مُهَاجِر أُمِّ قَيْس" — The Muhajir of Umm Qays.

This was not a sin (marriage is permissible), but he lost the immense reward of sincere Hijrah.
