Arabia Before Islam
🏜️ Arabia Before Islam — The Land of Prophecy
"Indeed, Allah conferred a great favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves"
— [Âl 'Imrân: 164]
📖 Introduction
A World Awaiting Light
Imagine a world where:
- Two colossal empires had been clashing for centuries: the Persians and the Romans
- A desert peninsula between them, considered by all to be worthless
- Scattered tribes with no state or king to unite them
- A small town in the heart of the desert called Mecca
In this forgotten place, Allah was preparing the greatest transformation in human history.
But to understand the greatness of what the Prophet ﷺ brought, we must first know how the world was before him.
🗺️ Geography — Land of Sand and Trade
📍 Location of the Arabian Peninsula
| Direction | Borders | Empire |
|---|---|---|
| North | Syria and Iraq | ⚔️ Romans and Persians |
| South | Yemen and Oman | 🌊 Arabian Sea |
| East | Persian Gulf | 🔥 Persians |
| West | Red Sea | 🏛️ Abyssinians |
💡 Strategic position: A bridge between East and West, yet impregnable due to its harsh desert.
🏙️ The Major Cities
| City | Significance | Inhabitants |
|---|---|---|
| Mecca 🕋 | The Kaaba, pilgrimage center, trade | Quraysh |
| Yathrib 🌴 | Agriculture, fertile oasis | Aws and Khazraj + Jews |
| Taif 🍇 | Fruits, temperate climate | Thaqîf |
| Sanaa 🏰 | Ancient Yemeni civilization | Himyar |
🐪 The Caravan Routes — The Lifeline
Trade was the backbone of the Arab economy:
| Route | From | To | Goods |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter Journey ❄️ | Mecca | Yemen | Incense, spices, silk |
| Summer Journey ☀️ | Mecca | Syria | Wheat, oil, textiles |
"For the accustomed security of the Quraysh, their accustomed security in the caravan of winter and summer"
— [Surah Quraysh: 1-2]
Quraysh dominated this trade thanks to:
- The Kaaba — The sanctuary where all were safe
- The Sacred Months — Four months when wars ceased
- Alliances — Treaties with tribes along the routes
⚔️ The Global Conflict — Persians and Romans
🌍 Map of the Superpowers
| Empire | Religion | Capital | Influence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Byzantine Romans 🦅 | Christianity | Constantinople | Syria, Egypt, North Africa |
| Sassanid Persians 🔥 | Zoroastrianism | Ctesiphon | Iraq, Persia, Yemen (temporary) |
📅 Major Events Before the Revelation
| Year | Event |
|---|---|
| 570 CE | 🐘 Year of the Elephant — Abraha's attack on Mecca |
| 572 CE | Persians expel the Abyssinians from Yemen |
| 602 CE | Persians defeat Romans, occupy Syria |
| 610 CE | 📖 Beginning of Revelation |
💡 Global context: While the two empires exhausted themselves in war, the light was being born in Mecca!
🕌 The Religious Situation — A Dark Jâhiliyyah
🗿 Dominant Polytheism
360 idols around the Kaaba! Each tribe had its deity:
| Idol | Tribe | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Hubal | Quraysh | Inside the Kaaba |
| Al-Lât | Thaqîf | Taif |
| Al-'Uzza | Quraysh and Kinâna | Valley of Nakhla |
| Manât | Aws and Khazraj | Qudayd |
"And they said: Do not abandon your gods, do not abandon Wadd, nor Suwâ', nor Yaghûth, Ya'ûq and Nasr"
— [Nûh: 23]
✨ Remnants of Abraham's Religion — The Hunafâ'
The peninsula was not devoid of monotheists:
| Hanîf | Description |
|---|---|
| Zayd ibn 'Amr ibn Nufayl | Rejected idols, sought Abraham's religion |
| Waraqa ibn Nawfal | Studied the scriptures, awaited the final Prophet |
| Quss ibn Sâ'ida | Orator of Iyâd, spoke of resurrection |
| Umayya ibn Abî as-Salt | Poet, knew monotheism but didn't convert |
📜 Story: Zayd asked the Jews and Christians about their religion. They told him: "You will find what you seek in Abraham's religion." He searched until he died, before the Revelation.
✝️ Jews and Christians
| Group | Location | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Jews | Yathrib, Khaybar, Taymâ' | Scattered tribes, awaiting a prophet |
| Christians | Najrân, some tribes | Ethiopian and Roman influence |
💡 The Jews would warn the Arabs: "The time of a prophet approaches; we will follow him and destroy you like 'Âd and Iram"!
👥 Social Structure — The Tribal World
🏛️ The Tribal System
The tribe was everything: identity, protection, law.
| Level | Example |
|---|---|
| The People | 'Adnân (Arabized Arabs) |
| The Tribe | Quraysh |
| The Clan | Banû Hâshim |
| The Family | Family of Abdul-Muttalib |
⚖️ Values and Customs
| Value | Meaning | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Generosity 🍖 | Feeding guests | They slaughtered camels for strangers |
| Courage ⚔️ | Defending the tribe | Death rather than dishonor |
| 'Asabiyyah 👊 | Tribal solidarity | "Support your brother, oppressor or oppressed" |
| Revenge 🩸 | Blood for blood | Wars lasting generations |
| Loyalty 🤝 | Honoring pacts | Die rather than betray |
📜 The War of Basûs: It lasted 40 years because of a she-camel! This was the level of tribal spirit.
👩 The Condition of Women
| Aspect | Reality |
|---|---|
| Inheritance | She didn't inherit |
| Marriage | She was inherited like property |
| Daughters | Some buried them alive (wa'd) |
| Polygamy | Without limit |
"And when the girl buried alive is asked, for what sin she was killed"
— [At-Takwîr: 8-9]
👤 Slavery
Slavery was widespread:
- War prisoners became slaves
- Slaves had no rights
- They were bought and sold like merchandise
💡 Among the oppressed: Bilâl ibn Rabâh, 'Ammâr ibn Yâsir, Suhayb ar-Rûmî... These would be among the first Muslims!
📜 Cultural Life — Eloquence and Poetry
📜 Arabic Language at Its Peak
The Arabs were proud of three things:
- Language — Eloquence and oratory
- Poetry — The dîwân of the Arabs
- Genealogies — Preservation of lineages
🎤 Literary Fairs
| Fair | Location | Activity |
|---|---|---|
| Sûq 'Ukâz | Near Taif | Poetry contests, speeches, trade |
| Sûq Dhû al-Majâz | Near 'Arafat | Trade during pilgrimage season |
| Sûq Majanna | Near Mecca | Literature and commerce |
📜 The Scene: At 'Ukâz, the poet would stand and recite his poem. If it pleased them, it was hung on the Kaaba: the Mu'allaqât (the Seven Suspended Odes)!
🏆 Great Poets of the Jâhiliyyah
| Poet | Title | Mu'allaqa |
|---|---|---|
| Imru' al-Qays | The Wandering King | "Stop and let us weep at the memory of a beloved..." |
| 'Antara ibn Shaddâd | Knight of the Arabs | "Have the poets left anything to say..." |
| Zuhayr ibn Abî Sulmâ | Sage of Poets | "From Umm Awfâ, is this a trace that speaks no more..." |
| Labîd ibn Rabî'a | The Wise | "The dwellings are effaced..." — He converted! |
💡 Labîd converted and stopped writing poetry. He said: "Allah gave me Surah al-Baqarah instead of poetry"!
📊 Comparison Table: Arabs vs Empires
| Aspect | 🏛️ Romans | 🔥 Persians | 🏜️ Arabs |
|---|---|---|---|
| System | Centralized empire | Absolute monarchy | Scattered tribes |
| Religion | Christianity (divided) | Zoroastrianism | Various polytheism |
| Culture | Greco-Roman | Ancient Persian | Oral Bedouin |
| Economy | Agriculture and trade | Agriculture and power | Herding and trade |
| Military | Regular army | Regular army | Tribal raids |
💡 The Paradox: From these "scattered" tribes would emerge a generation that would defeat both empires in less than 30 years!

🏛️ The Status of Quraysh
| Reason | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Custodians of the Kaaba | They served the Sacred House |

🐘 The Year of the Elephant — A Sign from Allah
📅 The Event (570 CE)
| Stage | What Happened |
|---|---|
| The Cause | Abraha al-Ashram builds the church of al-Qullays in Sanaa |
| The Jealousy | Arabs go to Mecca, not his church |
| The Decision | He leads an army with an elephant to destroy the Kaaba |
| The Arrival | He reaches the outskirts of Mecca, takes Abdul-Muttalib's camels |
| The Negotiation | Abdul-Muttalib asks only for his camels: "The House has a Lord who will protect it" |
| The Miracle | Birds Abâbîl pelted them with stones of baked clay |
"Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the People of the Elephant? Did He not make their plan go astray? And He sent against them birds in flocks, striking them with stones of baked clay. And He made them like eaten straw"
— [Surah al-Fîl]
⭐ The Divine Wisdom
| Significance | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Protection of the House | Allah preserves the Kaaba for what is coming |
| Preparing the Hearts | The Arabs witness Allah's power |
| The Timing | The same year the Prophet ﷺ would be born! |
