📅 Historical Context: Year 9 of the Hijra
After the conquest of Mecca and the victory at Hunayn, Islam reached a point of no return. The Ka'ba was purified, Quraysh was defeated, and the Arab tribes watched attentively.
The Decisive Turning Point
📜 Scene :
The Arabs were waiting to see the outcome of the conflict between Muhammad ﷺ and Quraysh.
They said: "Leave him with his people. If he defeats them, he is a true prophet. If they defeat him, he is a pretender."
When Mecca was conquered, they knew it was the truth!

📜 Delegation of Thaqif (Ta'if)
The same tribe that had stoned the Prophet ﷺ ten years earlier now came humbly...
📜 Scene :
The chiefs of Thaqif arrived in Medina.
Among them was 'Urwa ibn Mas'ud, who had been killed by his own people for calling them to Islam.
Now Thaqif came begging: "O Messenger of Allah, we accept Islam!"
But they tried to negotiate:
— "Let us keep al-Lat (our idol) for three years."
— The Prophet ﷺ refused.
— "Then one year?"
— He refused.
— "Then one month?"
— He categorically refused.They asked: "Exempt us from prayer!"
He ﷺ said: "There is no good in a religion without prayer."
They accepted everything.

📜 Delegation of Yemen (Najran)
A Christian delegation of 60 people came, dressed in silk, with golden crosses...
📜 Scene :
They entered the Prophet's ﷺ mosque at the time of their prayer.
They turned toward the east and prayed.
Some Companions wanted to stop them.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Leave them."

The Theological Debate
📜 Scene :
The Prophet ﷺ called them to Islam.
They said: "We worship 'Isa (Jesus) because he is the son of God!"
Then the revelation descended (Surah Al-'Imran):
﴿ Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was ﴾
— [Al-'Imran: 59]They refused to accept.
The Prophet ﷺ then invited them to Mubahala (mutual cursing):
﴿ If anyone disputes with you concerning him after the knowledge that has come to you, say, "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then let us invoke and lay the curse of Allah upon the liars" ﴾

The Moment of Truth
📜 Scene :
The next morning, the Prophet ﷺ came out holding al-Husayn's hand, carrying al-Hasan, followed by Fatima and 'Ali.
The bishop of Najran said to his people:
"By Allah, I see faces... if these people were to ask Allah to move a mountain, He would move it! Do not engage in Mubahala with them or you will be destroyed!"
They refused the Mubahala and chose to pay the Jizya.

📜 Delegation of 'Abd al-Qays (Bahrain)
📜 Scene :
The delegation of 'Abd al-Qays arrived.
Their chief, al-Ashajj, took his time to arrange his clothes and appearance before meeting the Prophet ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ said to him: "You have two qualities that Allah loves: forbearance (al-hilm) and deliberateness (al-anat)."
Al-Ashajj asked: "Is this something I acquired or was I born with it?"
He ﷺ replied: "It is something you were born with."
He said: "Praise be to Allah who created me with two qualities that He loves!"

Their Questions
They asked: "O Messenger of Allah, between us and you are the disbelievers of Mudar. We can only come during the sacred months. Give us a clear command that we can convey to those behind us."
The Prophet ﷺ commanded them four things and forbade them four things:

📜 Delegation of Tamim
📜 Scene :
The Banu Tamim arrived and called out loudly in front of the Prophet's ﷺ chambers:
"O Muhammad! Come out to us!"
Then it was revealed:
﴿ Indeed, those who call you from behind the chambers - most of them do not understand. And if they had been patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them ﴾
— [Al-Hujurat: 4-5]They wanted to have a contest of poetry and eloquence.
The Prophet ﷺ appointed Thabit ibn Qays as orator and Hassan ibn Thabit as poet.
The Muslims won and Tamim embraced Islam!

📜 Delegation of Himyar (Yemen)
The kings of Yemen sent their allegiance by letter.
📜 Scene :
The Prophet ﷺ received the letter from the kings of Himyar announcing their Islam.
He prostrated in gratitude (Sujud ash-Shukr)!
He sent Mu'adh ibn Jabal to teach them Islam.

Instructions to Mu'adh
📜 Scene :
When the Prophet ﷺ sent Mu'adh to Yemen, he said to him:
"You are going to a people who are People of the Book. Let the first thing you call them to be the oneness of Allah (Tawhid).
If they accept, inform them that Allah has prescribed for them five prayers every day and night.
If they accept, inform them that Allah has prescribed for them a charity (Zakat) taken from their wealthy and distributed to their poor.
Beware of the best of their wealth (do not take it for Zakat)!
And fear the supplication of the oppressed, for there is no veil between it and Allah!"

The Question of Judgment
📜 Scene :
The Prophet ﷺ asked Mu'adh:
"How will you judge?"
— "By the Book of Allah."
"And if you do not find it?"
— "By the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah."
"And if you do not find it?"
— "I will exercise my own judgment (Ijtihad) and spare no effort."
The Prophet ﷺ struck Mu'adh's chest and said:
"Praise be to Allah who has guided the messenger of the Messenger of Allah to what pleases the Messenger of Allah!"

When this surah was revealed, 'Umar understood and wept.
Ibn 'Abbas said: "It was an announcement of the death of the Prophet ﷺ."
