Analogical Reasoning (Qiyas)

🔗 Qiyas — Analogical Reasoning

﴿ So take warning, O people of insight ﴾

[Al-Hashr: 2]

📖 Introduction

📜 Scene: Omar and the Date Wine

Medina, during the caliphate of Omar...

A man came to Omar ibn al-Khattab — may Allah be pleased with him — and asked:

"O Commander of the Faithful, we have a drink made from dates called nabidh. Is it permissible?"

Omar gathered the Companions and said:

"Wine was forbidden because it intoxicates and prevents from prayer. Does this nabidh intoxicate?"

They answered: "Yes, if one drinks a lot of it."

Omar ruled:

"Whatever intoxicates in large amounts is forbidden even in small amounts. It has the same cause as wine!"

🎯 This is qiyas — extending a ruling from an original case to a new case because they share the same cause!

📜 Scene: Ali and Reasoning

Ali ibn Abi Talib — may Allah be pleased with him — was asked:

"Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ specify you with something special?"

Ali replied:

"No, except what is in this sheet... and a man's understanding of his religion."

💡 Qiyas is part of understanding the religion!

From the Quran

﴿ So take warning, O people of insight ﴾

[Al-Hashr: 2]

💡 "Take warning" (i'tibar) means analogizing one situation to another!

From the Sunnah

The Prophet ﷺ said to a man who questioned paternity:

"Do you have camels? What is their color? Is there a grey one among them? From where did it get its greyness?"

The man said: "Perhaps it's atavism."

The Prophet ﷺ said: "And perhaps this child is also atavism."

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

🎯 The Prophet ﷺ used qiyas to explain the ruling!

📜 Story: Abu Bakr and Analogizing Zakat

The Cause

After the Prophet ﷺ passed away, some tribes refused to pay zakat.

Some Companions said: "They are still Muslims, how can we fight them?"

Abu Bakr's Qiyas

Abu Bakr said:

"By Allah, if they withhold from me even a rope they used to give to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I will fight them for it! Zakat is the right of wealth, just as prayer is the right of the body!"

🎯 He analogized the obligation of zakat to the obligation of prayer!
