Custom and Blocking Pretexts
🌍 Al-'Urf and Sadd Al-Dhara'i — Custom and Blocking the Means
﴿ Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant ﴾
— [Al-A'raf: 199]
📖 Introduction
📜 Scene: Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and Women's Adornment
Kufa, during the era of the Companions...
A woman came to Abdullah ibn Mas'ud — may Allah be pleased with him — and said:
"Is it permissible to connect my hair with other hair?"
Ibn Mas'ud replied:
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the woman who connects hair."
The woman said: "But it's our custom!"
Ibn Mas'ud replied:
"If it contradicts Sharia, it is not a valid custom!"
🎯 Custom is considered — as long as it doesn't contradict Sharia!
📜 Scene: Omar and Blocking Pretexts
Omar ibn al-Khattab — may Allah be pleased with him — prohibited Muslims from marrying women of the People of the Book during conquests.
Some Companions said: "But Allah permitted it!"
Omar replied:
"I fear that if you take their women, you'll leave Muslim women without husbands! And you may be tempted in your religion!"
💡 This is Sadd Al-Dhara'i — blocking what leads to harm!
