📖 Introduction

He is the Imam of Ahl al-Sunna wal-Jama'a, the author of the great Musnad, and the symbol of steadfastness upon truth. He lived 77 years filled with scholarly jihad, and endured a trial that no one had endured before or after him. His funeral was attended by hundreds of thousands of people.

She carried him on her shoulders in the darkness to the mosque, and waited for him until the lesson ended.

Ahmad walks barefoot hundreds of miles through the desert.

Travel companion: "O Ahmad, why all this hardship?"

Ahmad (with faith): "For a single hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would cross the desert."

According to chroniclers, he collected hundreds of thousands of hadiths, and selected around 30,000 for his Musnad.

Soldiers take Ahmad in chains to the caliph's palace.

Al-Ma'mun (by letter): "Tell him: Say the Quran is created!"

Ahmad (calmly): "Bring me a verse or a hadith. Where is the proof?"

The vizier: "Either you say it, or prison and death!"

Ahmad: "The Book of Allah is not created. This is what I believe."

He was put in prison, chained.

Ahmad is suspended between two poles, his back bleeding.

The executioner (after each blow): "Say: The Quran is created! And you'll be freed!"

Ahmad (in a weak voice): "Bring me proof from the Book or the Sunna."

Caliph al-Mu'tasim (furiously): "Strike him!"

After the 80th lash, he collapsed unconscious. The caliph ordered them to stop.

Ahmad (later): "I forgave everyone who flogged me, except the innovators."

All of Baghdad comes out to accompany the Imam.

An eyewitness: "By Allah, I have never seen a funeral like this!"

Another: "Immense crowds! Chroniclers speak of hundreds of thousands of people!"

The funeral prayer was performed at the mosque, then in the streets, and people continued to pray at his grave for three days.
