Belief in the Last Day (Al-Yawm Al-Akhir)

📜 Belief in the Last Day — The Fifth Pillar of Faith

🌅 The Day When the Sun Draws Near

That Day, the sun does not rise from the east... It descends upon people's heads...

Close. Very close. One mile away...

The Prophet ﷺ: « The sun will be brought near the people on the Day of Resurrection until it is only a mile away. »

The Prophet ﷺ: « And people will be in their sweat according to their deeds: some up to their ankles, some up to their knees, some up to their waists, and some will have the sweat reaching their mouths like a bridle. »

(Sahih Muslim 2864)

On that Day, the dead emerge from their graves. The heavens split. The mountains become dust. Every soul stands alone before Allah...

No one knows when. Not the angels. Not the prophets. Not even Muhammad ﷺ.

﴿They ask you about the Hour: when is its arrival? Say: "Its knowledge is only with my Lord."﴾ [Al-A'raf: 187]

Belief in the Last Day is the fifth pillar of the six pillars of faith.

📖 The Foundational Hadith

📜 From the Hadith of Jibril

"That you believe in Allah, and His angels, and His Books, and His messengers, and the Last Day..."

(Sahih Muslim 8)

1️⃣ Death and the Grave

The Questioning of Munkar and Nakir

⚰️ The Test in the Darkness

The grave closes. People depart. The deceased hears the footsteps fade...

Suddenly, two enormous angels seat him upright...

Munkar & Nakir: « Who is your Lord? »

The believer: « My Lord is Allah. »

Munkar & Nakir: « What is your religion? »

The believer: « My religion is Islam. »

Munkar & Nakir: « Who is this man who was sent among you? »

The believer: « He is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. »

A voice from the heavens:

"My servant has spoken the truth! Furnish his grave from Paradise and open for him a gate to Paradise."

As for the disbeliever...

The disbeliever: (stammering) « Hah... hah... I don't know... I used to say what the people said... »

His grave constricts until his ribs interlock...

(Sahih Muslim 2870)

2️⃣ Signs of the Hour

📜 The Ten Major Signs

"The Hour will not come until you see ten signs: the Smoke, the Dajjal, the Beast, the sun rising from the West, the descent of 'Issa son of Maryam, Gog and Magog, and three earthquakes... and a fire from Yemen."

(Sahih Muslim 2901)

3️⃣ The Resurrection

🎺 The Blowing of the Trumpet

Israfil blows the first blast — everything dies...

Then the second blast:

﴿Then it will be blown again, and behold, they will be standing, looking on﴾ [Az-Zumar: 68]

Graves open... Bodies reassembled from the tailbone...

The Prophet ﷺ: « People will be resurrected barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised. »

'Aisha رضي الله عنها: « Men and women looking at each other?! »

The Prophet ﷺ: « O 'Aisha, the matter is too serious for them to look at each other! »

(Sahih Al-Bukhari 6527)

5️⃣ The Judgment and Books

📖 Two Destinies

He who receives his book in his right hand:

﴿As for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say: "Here, read my record!"﴾ [Al-Haqqa: 19]

Showing his book to everyone with joy...

He who receives his book in his left hand, behind his back:

﴿But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say: "I wish I had not been given my record. And had not known what is my account. I wish death had been the end!"﴾ [Al-Haqqa: 25-27]

6️⃣ The Balance

⚖️ The Man with 99 Registers

A man is brought on the Day of Judgment... 99 registers of sins are unfolded—each stretching as far as the eye can see...

Allah: « Do you have any excuse? »

The man: (despairing) « No, my Lord... »

Then a card is brought out: La ilaha illa Allah

The man: « O Lord, what can this card do against all these registers?! »

The registers are placed on one side... the card on the other...

The registers fly up! The card outweighs them!

The Prophet ﷺ: « Nothing outweighs the Name of Allah. »

(Tirmidhi 2639)

7️⃣ The Basin (Hawd)

📜 The Prophet's ﷺ Basin

"My Basin is as large as a month's journey. Its water is whiter than milk, its fragrance sweeter than musk, and its cups are like the stars of the sky. Whoever drinks from it will never thirst again."

(Sahih Al-Bukhari 6579)

8️⃣ The Sirat (Bridge)

﴿And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.﴾ [Maryam: 71]

📜 Description of the Sirat

The Prophet ﷺ: « The Sirat will be set over the midst of Hell. I will be the first of the messengers to cross with my community. »

(Sahih Muslim 195)

Sharper than a sword, thinner than a hair. People cross according to their deeds: like lightning, like wind, like a racing horse, and some crawl...

9️⃣ Paradise and Hell

🌴 Paradise

📜 What No Eye Has Seen

Allah said: « I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and what has never occurred to a human heart. »

(Sahih Al-Bukhari 3244)

﴿Faces that Day will be radiant. Looking at their Lord.﴾ [Al-Qiyamah: 22-23]

The greatest joy: Seeing Allah ﷻ

🔥 Hell

﴿Every time their skins are roasted through, We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment.﴾ [An-Nisa: 56]

🛡️ Refutations of Doubts

Doubt: "Resurrection is impossible"

✅ Refutation:

﴿Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the likes of them?﴾ [Ya-Sin: 81]

ArgumentAnswer
ImpossibleHe who created from nothing can recreate
Dead earthRain brings it back to life

🎯 Contemporary Applications

Case 1: "Enjoy life!"

Situation: A friend says: "There's no life after this. Enjoy!"

Answer: ❌ He forgot the Hereafter!

﴿Rather you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more lasting.﴾ [Al-A'la: 16-17]

🛡️ Refutation of Doubts (الشُّبُهات والرد عليها)

First Doubt: "The resurrection of bodies is impossible"

❌ The Doubt: Some say: "How can decomposed bodies come back to life?"

✅ The Refutation:

  1. The One who created can recreate:

    ﴿أَوَلَيْسَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَىٰ أَن يَخْلُقَ مِثْلَهُم﴾
"Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the likes of them?" [Ya-Sin: 81]

  2. The first creation is more difficult:

    ﴿وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَبْدَأُ الْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيدُهُ وَهُوَ أَهْوَنُ عَلَيْهِ﴾
"It is He who originates creation and then repeats it, and it is easier for Him." [Ar-Rum: 27]

  3. The example of dead earth:

    ﴿وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنَّكَ تَرَى الْأَرْضَ خَاشِعَةً فَإِذَا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا الْمَاءَ اهْتَزَّتْ وَرَبَتْ﴾
"Among His signs is that you see the earth barren, but when We send down water upon it, it stirs and swells." [Fussilat: 39]

Second Doubt: "Eternal Hell is unjust"

❌ The Doubt: "How can a finite sin deserve infinite punishment?"

✅ The Refutation:

  1. It is the intention that counts:
The disbeliever would have persisted in disbelief eternally if they had lived eternally.

  2. Rejection of Allah is infinite in gravity:
Denying the Creator of the universe is not an ordinary sin.

  3. Allah has warned clearly:

    ﴿وَأَنذِرْهُمْ يَوْمَ الْحَسْرَةِ﴾
"And warn them of the Day of Regret." [Maryam: 39]

  4. Justice belongs to Allah:
He is the Most Just and Most Wise. His justice is perfect.

Third Doubt: "No one has come back to testify"

❌ The Doubt: "No one has returned from death to confirm the Hereafter!"

✅ The Refutation:

  1. Belief in the unseen is the foundation:

    ﴿الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ﴾
"Those who believe in the unseen." [Al-Baqarah: 3]

  2. The prophets are the witnesses:
They received revelation and transmitted the truth.

  3. The Prophet ﷺ saw:
He saw Paradise and Hell during the Isra' and Mi'raj.

  4. The signs are numerous:
Daily death, sleep as a small death, nature that is reborn...

Fourth Doubt: "The material Paradise is primitive"

❌ The Doubt: "Why is Paradise described with physical pleasures like food and spouses?"

✅ The Refutation:

  1. Allah addresses all humans:
The mentioned pleasures are understandable by everyone.

  2. Paradise contains what cannot be imagined:

    «فِيهَا مَا لَا عَيْنٌ رَأَتْ، وَلَا أُذُنٌ سَمِعَتْ، وَلَا خَطَرَ عَلَى قَلْبِ بَشَرٍ»
"In it is what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and what has never come to the mind of a human." (Al-Bukhari 7498)

  3. The greatest joy is seeing Allah:

    ﴿وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاضِرَةٌ ۞ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ﴾
"Faces that Day will be radiant, looking at their Lord." [Al-Qiyamah: 22-23]

Fifth Doubt: "The signs of the Hour have already passed"

❌ The Doubt: "The minor signs have passed, why hasn't the Hour come?"

✅ The Refutation:

  1. Only Allah knows the Hour:

    ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ عِندَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ﴾
"Indeed, Allah alone has knowledge of the Hour." [Luqman: 34]

  2. The major signs have not yet appeared:
The Dajjal, the descent of 'Issa, Ya'juj and Ma'juj...

  3. The Hour will come suddenly:

    ﴿لَا تَأْتِيكُمْ إِلَّا بَغْتَةً﴾
"It will only come upon you suddenly." [Al-A'raf: 187]

📜 Stories about the Last Day

The Man Saved by a Good Word

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ رِضْوَانِ اللَّهِ، لَا يُلْقِي لَهَا بَالًا، يَرْفَعُهُ اللَّهُ بِهَا دَرَجَاتٍ»
"The servant may speak a word that pleases Allah, without paying attention to it, and Allah elevates him by it degrees." (Al-Bukhari 6478)

A single word can change everything!

The Man with 99 Registers of Sins

The Prophet ﷺ said:

A man will be brought on the Day of Judgment with 99 registers of sins, each stretching as far as the eye can see. He is asked: "Do you have anything to oppose this?" He says: "No."
Then a card is brought out with "La ilaha illa Allah." The registers are placed on one side, the card on the other. The card outweighs them!
(Tirmidhi 2639)

The sincerity of Tawhid can erase everything.

The Last to Enter Paradise

The Prophet ﷺ narrated about the last man to exit Hell and enter Paradise:

He will advance stumbling, the fire still burning him. Then he will see a tree and ask to sit in its shade. Then another, then another...

Finally, Allah will give him a kingdom ten times greater than this world!

The Vision of Allah in Paradise

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«إِنَّكُمْ سَتَرَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ عِيَانًا»
"You will see your Lord with your own eyes." (Al-Bukhari 7434)

This is the greatest joy of Paradise, greater than any other delight.

💎 Statements of Scholars about the Last Day

Imam Al-Hasan Al-Basri

"O son of Adam! You are but days. When a day passes, a part of you goes with it."

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim

"If you want to know your value with Allah, look at what He occupies you with. If He occupies you in His obedience, you have great value with Him."

Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah

"The heart finds no rest except in the remembrance of Allah and preparation for meeting Him."

Imam Ash-Shafi'i رحمه الله

"Whoever is not sad for his sins does not know the value of the Day of Judgment."

Supplication

O Allah, make our passage over the Sirat easy, grant us to drink from the Basin of the Prophet ﷺ, and admit us to Paradise through the Gate of Rayyan.
O Allah, protect us from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of Hell.

O Lord, increase me in knowledge! 📖
