Al-Isra wal-Mi'raj

🌌 Al-Isra wal-Mi'raj — The Journey Beyond the Universe

﴿ Glory be to Him who took His servant on a night journey from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing ﴾
Surah Al-Isra, verse 1

📍 The Context — After the Year of Sorrow

After the death of Khadija رضي الله عنها and Abu Talib, after the painful journey to Ta'if, the Prophet ﷺ was going through one of the most difficult periods of his life. He had lost his beloved wife, his protective uncle, and had been rejected by the tribe of Ta'if.

📜 The Scene:

On a Meccan night, the Prophet ﷺ was sleeping at the house of Umm Hani bint Abi Talib, near the Ka'ba. The sky was studded with stars, and the city was immersed in the silence of night. No one knew that this night would become the most extraordinary in human history.

🌙 Al-Isra — From Mecca to Jerusalem

⭐ The Arrival of Jibril عليه السلام

📜 The Scene:

Jibril عليه السلام came to the Prophet ﷺ accompanied by Mikael. They opened his blessed chest, took out his heart, washed it with Zamzam water in a golden basin filled with faith and wisdom, then returned it to its place.

This second purification of the heart — the first had occurred in his childhood with Halima as-Sa'diya — was preparation for a journey no human had ever undertaken.

🐴 Al-Buraq — The Celestial Mount

The Prophet ﷺ was brought a mount unlike any seen before:

CharacteristicDescription
NameAl-Buraq (from "barq": lightning, for its speed)
SizeLarger than a donkey, smaller than a mule
ColorBrilliant white
StridePlaces its hoof where its gaze reaches
HistoryRidden by prophets before him

💬 From the Hadith:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I was brought al-Buraq, a white mount, larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule. It places its hoof at the extent of its gaze."
— Reported by Muslim

🕌 The Prayer with the Prophets at Al-Aqsa

The Prophet ﷺ reached Jerusalem in moments. There, at the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, occurred a scene the Earth had never witnessed:

📜 The Scene:

All the prophets and messengers — from Adam to 'Isa عليهم السلام — had gathered to welcome a noble guest. When Muhammad ﷺ entered, he stepped forward to lead them in prayer as imam.

Adam, the father of humanity... Nuh, the elder of the messengers... Ibrahim, the intimate friend of the Most Merciful... Musa, the one who spoke directly with Allah... 'Isa, the spirit of Allah... all behind him in a single prayer!

This was divine testimony that Muhammad ﷺ is the Seal of the Prophets and their imam.

🥛 The Choice — Milk or Wine?

After the prayer, the Prophet ﷺ was presented with two vessels:

VesselMeaning
🥛 MilkPure nature (fitra)
🍷 WineDeviation and misguidance

💬 The Choice:

The Prophet ﷺ chose the milk and drank it.

Jibril said to him: "You have chosen the fitra. Had you taken the wine, your nation would have gone astray."
— Reported by al-Bukhari

🚀 Al-Mi'raj — The Ascension Through the Seven Heavens

🌟 The First Heaven — Adam عليه السلام

Jibril took the Prophet ﷺ up to the first heaven. When they arrived, Jibril knocked at the gate of heaven:

💬 The Dialogue:

The Guardian: Who is this?
Jibril: Jibril.
The Guardian: And who is with you?
Jibril: Muhammad.
The Guardian: Has he been sent for?
Jibril: Yes.
The Guardian: Welcome to him! What an excellent coming!

The gates of heaven opened, and the Prophet ﷺ saw a man sitting, with figures (souls) to his right and left. When he looked to his right, he laughed; when he looked to his left, he wept.

💬 Jibril said: "This is your father Adam. The figures to his right are the souls of the blessed, and those to his left are the souls of the damned."

Adam عليه السلام said: "Welcome to the righteous son and the righteous prophet" 💚

🌟 The Second Heaven — Yahya and 'Isa عليهما السلام

ProphetTitleRelationship
Yahya عليه السلامProphet of AllahCousin of 'Isa
'Isa عليه السلامSpirit of Allah and His WordThe Messiah, son of Maryam

📜 The Scene:

The Prophet ﷺ saw them, these two cousins. 'Isa عليه السلام had a reddish complexion, with many moles, as if he had just come out of a bath. The person who resembled him most was 'Urwa ibn Mas'ud ath-Thaqafi.

They said: "Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous prophet" 💚

🌟 The Third Heaven — Yusuf عليه السلام

In the third heaven, the Prophet ﷺ met Yusuf عليه السلام — the one who was given half of all beauty.

💬 The Prophet ﷺ said: "I found Yusuf there, and he had been given half of all beauty."

Yusuf said: "Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous prophet" 💚

🌟 The Fourth Heaven — Idris عليه السلام

﴿ And We raised him to a high station ﴾
— Surah Maryam, verse 57

In the fourth heaven, the Prophet ﷺ met Idris عليه السلام, whom Allah had raised to a lofty position.

Idris said: "Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous prophet" 💚

🌟 The Fifth Heaven — Harun عليه السلام

In the fifth heaven, the Prophet ﷺ met Harun ibn 'Imran — the brother of Musa عليهما السلام.

BrotherMusa, who spoke directly with Allah

Harun said: "Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous prophet" 💚

🌟 The Sixth Heaven — Musa عليه السلام

In the sixth heaven, the Prophet ﷺ met Musa, who spoke directly with Allah:

📜 The Scene:

A man of brown complexion, tall, with curly hair, as if he were from the men of Shanu'a. When the Prophet ﷺ passed him going up, Musa wept!

He was asked: What makes you weep?

Musa said: "I weep because a young man sent after me will have more of his nation enter Paradise than of mine."

Musa said: "Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous prophet" 💚

🌟 The Seventh Heaven — Ibrahim عليه السلام

At the highest of heavens, the seventh heaven, came the most moving moment:

📜 The Scene:

The Prophet ﷺ saw Ibrahim al-Khalil — his ancestor — with his back leaning against al-Bayt al-Ma'mur (the Frequented House). He was the person who most closely resembled the Prophet ﷺ.

Al-Bayt al-Ma'mur is the Ka'ba of the heavens. Every day, seventy thousand angels enter it to pray, then never return to it again!

💬 Ibrahim عليه السلام said:

"Welcome to the righteous son and the righteous prophet" 💚

Then he added: "O Muhammad, convey my greetings to your nation, and inform them that Paradise has pure soil and sweet water, that it is comprised of plains, and that its plantings are: Subhan Allah, Al-Hamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, and Allahu Akbar."

🌳 Sidrat al-Muntaha — Where the Knowledge of Creation Ends

Beyond the seventh heaven, the Prophet ﷺ rose to a place that no creature had ever reached before:

﴿ Near Sidrat al-Muntaha ﴾
﴿ Near it is the Garden of Refuge ﴾
﴿ When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered it ﴾
— Surah An-Najm, verses 14-16

Description of Sidrat al-Muntaha

💬 The Prophet ﷺ said: "Then I was raised to Sidrat al-Muntaha. Its fruits were like the clay vessels of Hajar, and its leaves were like elephant ears... When it was covered by Allah's command, it was transformed, and no creature of Allah can describe its beauty."
— Reported by al-Bukhari

🌊 The Four Rivers

From the base of Sidrat al-Muntaha flow four rivers:

Two hidden riversOn EarthThe Nile and the Euphrates

🎁 The Five Prayers — Allah's Gift to the Believers

The Obligation of Fifty Prayers

At this sublime place, near Sidrat al-Muntaha, Allah prescribed upon the nation of Muhammad ﷺ:

Fifty prayers per day and night

🔄 The Reduction — The Role of Musa عليه السلام

📜 The Scene:

When the Prophet ﷺ descended and passed by Musa عليه السلام, he asked:

Musa: What have you been commanded?
The Prophet ﷺ: Fifty prayers.
Musa: Your nation will not be able to bear that! I tested the Children of Israel and know them well. Return to your Lord and ask Him for a reduction for your nation.

The Stages of Reduction

StageNumberReduction
First50
Second45-5
Third40-5
.........
Final5definitive

📜 The Final Scene:

When the number reached five prayers, Musa said: Go back and ask for a reduction.

The Prophet ﷺ replied: "I have asked my Lord so many times that I am ashamed. But I am satisfied and submit."

As he moved away, a Caller proclaimed:

"I have confirmed My obligation and lightened the burden upon My servants. They are five prayers in practice, but fifty in reward. Whoever intends a good deed but does not do it, one good deed is recorded for him. If he does it, ten are recorded for him. And whoever intends a bad deed but does not do it, it is not recorded. If he does it, only one bad deed is recorded."

☀️ The Next Morning — The Great Test

🗣️ Telling Quraysh

The Prophet ﷺ returned the same night. In the morning, he told Quraysh what he had seen:

📜 The Scene:

The Prophet ﷺ sat near the Sacred Mosque. Abu Jahl came to him, mocking:

Abu Jahl: Is there anything new?
The Prophet ﷺ: Yes, I journeyed last night to Bayt al-Maqdis.
Abu Jahl (sarcastically): To Bayt al-Maqdis?! And you're back among us this morning?!
The Prophet ﷺ: Yes.

Abu Jahl shouted: O clan of Ka'b! Come! Listen to what he says!

People rushed to listen and mock...

🕌 Describing Bayt al-Maqdis

The polytheists asked him to describe Bayt al-Maqdis to test him:

💬 The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Then Bayt al-Maqdis was presented before me (before my eyes), and I began describing its features to them while looking at it."
— Reported by al-Bukhari

He described its doors, windows, and details precisely — even though he had never visited it before!

🐫 The Witness Caravan

He gave them another proof:

💬 The Prophet ﷺ said:

"I passed by a caravan of Quraysh at such-and-such place. They had lost a camel and I guided them to it while I was heading to Sham. Then returning, when I was at Dajnan, I passed by the caravan of such-and-such tribe. The people were asleep, and they had a water container covered with something. I lifted its cover, drank what was in it, then covered it as it was. The proof of this is that their caravan will arrive from the pass... led by a gray camel carrying two sacks, one black and one spotted."

The people went out to watch for the caravan... It arrived exactly as he had described! 🐫

💎 Abu Bakr as-Siddiq — Belief Without Hesitation

📜 The Scene:

Some polytheists came to Abu Bakr to mock:

The polytheists: O Abu Bakr! Have you heard what your companion is saying? He claims he journeyed last night to Bayt al-Maqdis!
Abu Bakr: Did he really say that?
The polytheists: Yes!
Abu Bakr: If he said it, then he has spoken the truth!

The polytheists (amazed): You believe him when he says he went to Bayt al-Maqdis last night and returned before morning?!
Abu Bakr: Yes! I believe him for things far more extraordinary! I believe him when he conveys news from heaven, morning and evening!

🏆 From that day, he was called "as-Siddiq" — because he believed without the slightest hesitation

🌅 Conclusion

﴿ The sight did not swerve, nor did it transgress ﴾
﴿ He certainly saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord ﴾
— Surah An-Najm, verses 17-18

In a single night, the Prophet ﷺ saw what no human had seen. He rose to where no creature had ascended. And he returned with the greatest gift: the prayer — the direct connection between the servant and his Lord.

The journey of Al-Isra wal-Mi'raj was a divine message: no matter how intense the trials, Allah is with the patient.
